*The NFL announced the continuation of the “social justice” messaging in the endzone for the 2025 season.
Yes, I’m complaining again. Maybe I shouldn’t. But I can’t help but notice that pro-football, both the NFL and Division 1A college in this era of the transfer portal and NIL, has swelled beyond an athletic contest of trained, skilled, and fit athletes under great coaching into an extravaganza, a bacchanalia in many cases, a show to rival anything on Broadway, and embellished with trendy ideological crusades. A manufactured over-the-top enthusiasm is evangelized in the commercials that glosses over reality. The whole thing from the pregame to halftime and afterward has become our secular society’s version of America at worship, a worship of the outlandish.
Our pews are emptying but 100,000-seat stadiums packed, tv ratings off the charts. But where’s the game; where’s the simple fact that this is a match between teams of the highly honed in mind and body? The comely Carrie Underwood struts out on a runway to belt out the theme of Sunday Night Football amid pyrotechnics, strobe lights, and flashy cameos of rock and football celebrities. The Sao Paulo game between the Chiefs and Chargers had a gaudy Super Bowl-style halftime that’ll rival anything in February, or the raunchiest Mardi Gras. Again, where’s the game; where’s the clash of great athletes in shoulder pads in all this hubbub?
Trendy ideological beliefs permeate the production. Five years after George Floyd, the deadly summer of chaos, defund the police, metropolitan downtowns laid waste, and the subsequent flight of business and the middle class from these toxic environments, the NFL is still pursuing “social justice” – er, “equity”. The games continue to be festooned with a national anthem for a racial group. End zones are tattooed with “End Racism” or “It Takes All of Us”. Is this a Democratic Party rally or a game?
Yeah, “end racism”, and end the gratuitous virtue signaling. The NFL overtly perpetuates the myth that men and women are equal in their fascination for sports (see #1 for insight into that). The NFL lavishes funds on flag football so the girls can show off their physical prowess (proof that everyone is over-paying for this thing). I thought that transgenderism abated the illusions of physical “equity”. It’s more than expanding the fan base. Throughout, including the commercials, physical differences are whitewashed, and women are equally gonzo as the men. It’s as if the NFL is busy shaming those women, maybe most, of different inclinations. It appears to be the NFL’s vast social engineering project.
It’s true. The NFL is proof of John O’Sullivan’s First Law (see #2): “Any organization not explicitly and constitutionally right-wing will sooner or later become left-wing.” Thanks, Roger Goodell, for the garish twice-weekly cultural revolution. I just want a game absent all of the folderol.
Watch Greg Kelly and Megyn Kelly (no relation) on her show. I won’t vouch for everything said but sympathize with the sentiment. I, too, am done with the NFL.
Oh, by the way, you can drop that ridiculous kickoff routine.

Years ago – I retired from teaching in 2015 – I used Back to School Night as an opportunity to speak to parents about the ways they can help their child succeed in school. One suggestion was to refuse to give the kid a smartphone. Another was to never install a computer in the child’s bedroom. A lone computer for school work should be placed in a common area in the home and supervised by the parent. No personal smartphone, carte blanche internet access, and limit the availability of home electronic devices (TVs, tablets, etc.). Add making family meals a communal experience.
Good advice? Probably, but the genie has leapt out of the bottle long ago. Today, we have a youth culture that has taken a dark turn. Witness the school shootings since at least Columbine. Two, one in 2023 (the Nashville killer, Audrey Hale) and this most recent one, are transgender young adults targeting children. No, transgenderism is not an archetype for mass homicide. But maybe gender anxieties can come hitched to other emotional comorbidities. It’s something to seriously ponder.
We certainly have an entire generation intimately obsessed with the online world. There are many dark places in that space, and one of the darkest is social media. It has the awful capacity to accelerate discomfort, discontent, and organized bullying. The digital world has the nasty habit of according distance from the objects of online hate. The sentiment is depersonalized thereby removing the normal constraints that inhabit one-on-one encounters. It should not be surprising that an explosion of rage occasionally occurs.
In this regard, I am reluctant to turn to Netflix as a window into modern youth culture; however, I recommend “Adolescence” for a realistic perspective on the problem. The story and scenes are gripping for what it seems to be saying about the social underbelly of our children’s lives. A 13-year-old murderer, the edgy middle school social atmosphere, an ever-present online culture, a nearly dysfunctional school with a spottily competent teaching staff and administrators, and omnipresent video in the classroom make for a troubling stew. I have seen the first two episodes, and that is my impression at this point.
Are we making our children forever anxious and fundamentally illiterate? Is social media a catalyst for faddish ideologies and their ensuing emotional discomforts? Could we be breeding our own demise? Please watch “Adolescence” now showing on Netflix, at least the first two episodes. It could be a chronicle of our descent into madness.
No, the title is not a reference to the likes of Steve Bannon or Tucker Carlson joining the ranks of Antifa or the crowd behind Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral candidacy. But they are unknowingly thinking like a Marxist.
The emergence of this new mental orientation on the Right begins with being “woke”. Specifically, it’s jargon for a hypothetical state of awareness, a capability of perceiving the deeper reality that is concealed to all but the most discerning. Facts are optional. The idea is traceable to Karl Marx, and therefore central to the “woke” Left with all their “critical theories” of oppressor/oppressed and the beleaguered “marginalized”.
Marx was not satisfied with a call for revolution. That’s too simple. His thought is more robust than that. He sought to explain the stream of all human experience since the dawn of time. For him, we are socialized into our status as oppressors or the oppressed. To set the world right according to him and Engels, the complete human, not just society, minds and all, need to be reshaped to be truly “free”. We must be cleansed of this filth of past and present socialization. He’s advocating totalitarianism pure and simple.
Marx called the malign socialization of traditional society “false consciousness”. In Marx’s fevered imagination, almost everything in our existence trains us into accepting our condition, like our language, family, marriage, faith, traditions, etc. Marx wanted all of it junked and refashioned at the behest of his woke “Dictatorship of the Proletariat”. For anyone with an ounce of humanity, this should send shivers down your spine. We now have generations trained in the gibberish. It shows, look at the young.
Neo-Marxist thinkers of the Frankfurt School in 1920s and 1930s Germany (technically, the University of Frankfurt Institute for Social Research) – Adorno, Horkheimer, Marcuse, etc. – fled Nazi Germany, landed in the West, most notably the U.S. The virus spread in the academic “soft sciences” throughout the 1950s to today, waiting on the gullibility of Robin DeAngelo, Ibram X. Kendi, BLM, Occupy Wall Street, the college campus mobs, statue topplers, the faculty lounge, and the looser canons of the Democratic Party such as AOC, Mamdani, the surviving Squad, Bernie and his “bros”, the DNC.

What infected the Left has spread to the Right in what the French philosopher Jean-Pierre Faye referred to as The Horseshoe Theory: both Left and Right come to mirror authoritarian tendencies, but actually more than that. A woke Left leads to a reaction in the rise of a new woke Right. Marx has his bourgeoisie bogeymen; Fascists have their liberals (classical liberals, that is), “cosmopolitans”, Jews, or anyone that they see as undermining national solidarity. Parts of the new Right have copyrighted their own hobgoblins.

All claim to have the gift of seeing the clandestine threat, the hidden structure of oppression, and are thus awoken. An element of the Right shows symptoms of the “woke” infection. It starts with a unique vocabulary for the Right, words that remind a person of the allegedly hidden cabals and insidious networks not seen by the average person. Establishment, elites, neocons, globalists, warmongers, the deep state, for instance, all generalities, litter their harangues. Only they are awoken enough to expose it. QAnon appears, the alleged Epstein/Israeli cabal, the swamp, etc. Similarly, Marxists forever after 1917 were in a constant state of vigilance against “wreckers”, underground churches and worshippers, samizdat free thinkers, kulaks, saboteurs. Now the Right has joined the thought-fad by listing their own scapegoats.
Tune into Candace Owens and her tirades about the pernicious influence of Jews bordering on blood libel (the medieval canard about the murder of Christians by Jews to use their blood in religious rituals). Coming to the defense of the emotionally unstable Kanye West and his rant against the Jews of Hollywood, here’s Candace:
“What if that is what is happening right now in Hollywood? If there is just a very small ring of specific people who are using the fact that they are Jewish to shield themselves from any criticism, it’s food for thought, right? And I think, again, there have been enough people that are speaking out about a ring in Hollywood, also a ring potentially in DC, that we should start to ask those questions.” (see #1)
Sounds innocuous? The talk of a “ring of Jews to shield themselves” in Candace’s punditry smacks of the same shadowy forces occupying the minds of the Left. She said in the manner of Marx and Lenin when speaking of the bourgeoise, “They will kill people before they allow that ring to be exposed.”
The stark language of generalized and shadowy forces is strikingly similar to the bombast of the evil machinations of the bourgeoisie coming off the pen of Lenin in 1919: “The bourgeoisie and their agents in the workers’ organisations [sic] are making desperate attempts to find ideological and political arguments in defence [sic] of the rule of the exploiters.” (see #2)
For some on the Right, like their “woke” soulmates on the Left, antisemitism is making a comeback. Since the memory of the demonic Holocaust, though fading, still haunts us, their antisemitism is prefaced by disclaimers, versions of “Oh, no, not me” and “Some of my best friends are . . .” and “I love . . .”. It’s rhetorical maneuvering to engage in antisemitism by angling the Jewish identity into a cabal working against the interests and will of the American people.

The influential Tucker Carlson drinks at the same trough. Recently, he has been consumed in anxiety over the nefarious influence of the powerful, who just so happen to be Jews. On Zelensky, the president of Ukraine of Jewish ancestry, Tucker defames him and the leader of Blackrock in a two-fer, “Sweaty and rat-like, a comedian turned oligarch, a persecutor of Christians, a friend of BlackRock.” Blackrock, the investment firm? It is led by Larry Fink, also Jewish. Compare this to some of the things in Völkischer Beobachter (National Socialist official newspaper, “People’s Observer”). (see #3)
He throws aspersions at Ben Shapiro, an Orthodox Jew, for being insufficiently devoted to the U.S., for having divided loyalties with you-know-who (Israel). Remember, Carlson has tirelessly expressed mortification about the post-9/11 wars, the “forever wars”, and warmongers. His argument, taken to its obvious conclusion, demands no foreign policy till we have solved all our problems. It is isolationism. Our special relationship with Israel, a country under constant threat of annihilation, is a regular source of annoyance to him.
The Jew thing crops up in his head. In response to Shapiro and other conservative commentators, he insists, “. . . so many of these people don’t seem to have the same level of actual care for American citizens.”
Contrasting himself with the allegedly rootless Shapiro, a Jew, he is unflinchingly American:
“I’m from here, my family’s been here hundreds of years, I plan to stay here. I’m shocked by how little they care about the country.” (see #4)
You see, this new online Right is immersed in the old bigoted trope of the “cosmopolitan” Jew, a people who cannot be trusted to have patriotic monogamy.
As for Americans who sign up for the IDF, Carlson ranted,
“There are a lot of Americans who’ve served in the IDF — they should lose their citizenship. You can’t fight for another country and remain an American, period.”
It is lost on him that Americans joined the Canadian Air Force to fight for Britain in WWII, that Americans for a century volunteered for the French Foreign Legion, and to fight communists in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Cuba, Angola, etc. Should they be booted from the ranks of citizen?
Carlson traffics in the Epstein/Mossad conspiracy story. More tales of the unhinged. He ruminates (see #5):
“. . . I think the real answer is Jeffrey Epstein was working on behalf of intel services, probably not American [Mossad]. . . . Now, no one’s allowed to say that the foreign government is Israel because we have been somehow cowed into thinking that’s naughty.”
There seems to be no grand mystery where a Jew cannot be found to be in the middle of it.
All such thought-fads that become embedded in the culture have a catalyst, usually a combination of events, mercurial personalities, and a potential reservoir of acolytes anxiously looking for a leader who can personify their angst. In 2015, a leader appeared in the form of Donald Trump and his coalescing MAGA movement. No, he’s not Hitler. No, he’s not an anti-Semite, far from it. He’s of the ilk of Theodore Roosevelt, a man who always wanted to be the “bride and every wedding, the corpse at every funeral, and the baby at every Christening” (according to TR’s daughter, Alice Roosevelt Longworth). Many people at the time became infatuated with TR as a force of nature (many still do). Specifics mattered little. Ditto for Trump and MAGA. Democracies are susceptible to enchantment.
His acolytes in the media and administration speak of him and his words with such reverence. His words carry the divine sanction of the Gospels. Yet, honestly, the yearning on the Right is based on real and pressing concerns. Our government is so big that it is no longer answerable to us. Our public spending and debt spiral out of control. Our education system has become the Left’s prep school, a training ground for future hordes of malcontents. The terms “boy” and “girl” are forcibly muddled making sexual privacy and safety meaningless. Genital mutilation of minors (“gender-affirming care”), really? Crime is seen as a call for therapy. Public barbarism in roving gangs of youth and ramshackle tent encampments sprawling across our cities have made salient parts of them unlivable.
This is the low-hanging fruits of the Left’s long march though the institutions. The Left’s cultural sickness spread to other countries in our foreign policy. Pride flags unfurled at our embassy in Kabul, really? The reaction did not stop there. The long twilight struggle against international terrorism in the 9/11 wars of Afghanistan and Iraq was fodder for “populists”, first by the Left (“Bush lied, people died”, “No blood for oil”, Code Pink) and now by parts of the Right, to take the indictment further to include “forever wars”, “warmongers”, “neocons”, the Bushes.
Trump and MAGA gave the angst organizational form. Trump and his movement produced the “populist” Right’s vocabulary and targets of derision. Everyone and everything in the newsfeed get sucked into the new Right’s vortex. Unwittingly, Trump and MAGA are the catalyst and accelerant for the new woke Right. Intentionality is irrelevant. Gadflies on the fringe, from tiki-torch machers in Charlottesville to Trump foolishly having lunch with the antisemite Kanye West and the far-Right blowhard Nick Fuentes, are attracted to a burgeoning movement with real concerns.
Without the rise of Trump populism and its disparagement of “elites” and the amorphous “establishment”, it’s hard to conceive of a wokeness on the Right. Real misbehavior – the Russia hoax, lawfare, “the resistance”, higher ed’s neo-Marxist cultural revolution, etc. – invites ruminations of a conspiratorial underworld. The Left sees it in “whiteness”. The Right might see it in the Jews, “neocons”, an intersectionality between the two, globalists, a conspiratorial “deep state”, etc.
Some on the “woke Right” end up sounding like their brethren on the Left in a condemnation of capitalism, or free markets, as nothing more than an abstract ideology and not the product of government simply leaving people alone. Both ends of the spectrum are enthused about government and its politics manipulating the economy to benefit some oppressed class.

Let our vice president, J.D. Vance, in his own words, illustrate the union of the Left and Right in their “wokeness”:
* The Left’s Mother Jones magazine quoted Vance’s endorsement of the 2023 UAW strike when Vance said he was “[r]ooting for the auto workers across our country demanding higher wages.” (see #6)
* Vance supported Biden’s “bigness in business is badness” FTC chair Lina Khan by saying, “A lot of my Republican colleagues look at Lina Khan … and they say, ‘well Lina Khan is sort of engaged in some sort of fundamental evil thing.” Further adding, “And I guess I look at Lina Khan as one of the few people in the Biden administration that I think is doing a pretty good job.” (see #7)
* Vance champions the Democrats’ spendthrift rationale for entitlements, reducing a looming disaster for the young to the blasé, “One way of understanding the Social Security problem is, old people can’t work, young people can, babies can’t.” And curtly concluding, “So people at a certain age support the babies and the old people.” (see #8)
Between bashing business for exploiting workers and praising lefty economists/lawyers and boosting bankrupting entitlements, Vance exemplifies something more than “populism”. He signifies that coming together of the woke Left and Right in embracing the union extortion racket, socialist economics (an oxymoron since socialism is all about government, not economics), and the old getting the chance to pillage the young. It’s abominable.
The French writer, Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, in 1849 once quipped, “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose”, or “the more things change, the more they stay the same”. Or at least, the two ends merge into the same mass over time, all “woke”, all sounding like each other, all sounding Marxist.

Helicopter parenting seems to be a feature of some child raising today, may be an inbred reflex for older marrieds finally birthing one or two children. It comes with unforeseen costs which will be borne by the child later in life. The coddling cripples the youngster from developing the coping mechanisms and needed personality corrections when facing difficulties. Life disciplines if allowed to operate. The costs of leniency appear later when bail becomes necessary for storming federal courthouses, assaulting ICE agents, toppling statues and defacing cemeteries, and roaming around in mobs threatening free speech on campus. Mom and dad, get prepared for a hefty therapy bill as well. Coddled people are frequently nervous wrecks as adults.
The costs of coddling reach humungous levels when implemented on a national scale, such as showering subsidies, tax code benefits, and tariff protections on certain industries. Government becomes a helicopter parent, permissive and indulgent, enticing their dependents to continue in their morbid obesity and gross wastefulness. Who ultimately pays? Guess what . . . You!
Does any of this make any sense? “Yes” to the recipients, and “no” to everyone else. The more important question is, do our elected poohbahs wallow in this form of bad parenting on a national scale? Yes, because it pays. It buys the votes of people nostalgic for a world before the latest innovation. It goes something like this: my dad worked on Chevies, Fords, and Dodges, and that’s how God created the world. Who doesn’t want to freeze in amber the world of their formative years? Luddites of every generation will always be a potent political constituency.
The application of economic laws (supply, demand, price signals, incentives, etc.) to government was explored by economists Gordon Tullock and James Buchanan in something that they called Public Choice Theory. Surprise, they showed that politicians shop around for votes. They won the Nobel prize in economics for their groundbreaking work. Tullock took the analysis further by examining the immense hidden costs of tariffs; something Trump refuses to understand (see #1, #2).
Tariffs coddle the too-big-to-fail companies and their extortionate union parasites, both with their tentacles deep into the campaign war chests of the elected. Then, once in office, the bennies roll in, now especially under Trump. Trump’s most beautiful word in the English language, tariff, acts as an accelerant for a new growth industry, special consultancy services (tariff brokers and such) to help business navigate the new flood of paperwork and rules, and army of new government hires, regurgitated out of Leviathan. These services aren’t free, and add new costs to the bottom line and the public purse, all to be borne by you in fewer choices, higher prices, and higher taxes and/or public debt.
Think about it, think about a time before the income tax. Yes, there was a time when April 15 was just another spring day, and not the deadline to avoid fines and jail. It used to be the natural order of things, except for the brief period of the Civil War, until 1913 and Woodrow Wilson signed the implementing law after the 1909 approval of the 16th Amendment allowed the monstrosity. After it and other changes to the tax code, who doesn’t need a tax accountant to steer clear of the maw of the IRS? Many, many. The government’s insatiable appetite for more money added a new layer to the cost of living, the professional tax accountant and lawyer and software.
Trump is accomplishing the same feat with his “Liberation Day”. That and all the subsequent trade deals will end up spiking the average U.S. tariff from a low of 2.5% in 2024 to over 5% in 2025, and a general 15% on a huge portion of it (see #3). It’s a flat-out tax increase added to the bottom line, added to your cost of living and running a business. Trump boasts of billions pouring into the federal treasury as if it is coming out of the pockets of foreigners. He’s selling a falsehood. Much analysis has been devoted to who pays the tariffs (see #2). It shows the residents of the authoring country footing the bill. I don’t think Trump cares because tariffs are “beautiful” to him; they harken him back to a time 70 years ago, the world of his youth, and his obsession with recreating it.
The sheer absurdity of Trump’s tariff regime will be clear if we take a look at one industry, copper. You know, the hotly sought-after basic and essential stuff for the Dems’ greenie electrified utopia or Trump’s buy-only-America one. It’s a classic case of a blockheaded Trump obsession mucking up U.S. industries by pushing a solution in search of a problem.
Let’s start with a basic stat: 45% of U.S. copper consumption is imported (see #5). The remaining 55% is domestically produced. So, why the 50% tariff on imported copper? Intended or not, Trump is forcing domestic users of copper to pay more for it out of a constricted internal supply. Why constricted? Over decades, we willed it so. Try to open a new mine and avoid the stinging swarms of eco-zealots at all levels. Behind walling off the richer seams behind national monuments and lines of legal-eagle firing squads, the potentially condemned seek other venues of investment. 55% could be a lot more but isn’t because we’d rather pay to dig up the land under other people. Currently, the U.S. ranks seventh in proven reserves in the world, more than China, but won’t touch much of it (see #5).
And, anyway, it’s not such a bad idea to diversify sources for national security reasons. Domestic supplies can be disrupted by events such as strikes by Trump’s newfound allies in organized labor’s extortion racket. Natural disasters and mechanical breakdowns in the chain from mine to mill, as happens in oil refining, are inevitable. Is it such a horrible thought to be on good terms with countries like Chile, our largest foreign source? Though, If you see foreigners as enemies, like Trump, economic or otherwise, don’t be surprised that many of them end up providing new naval basing and investment opportunities for the CCP. Tariffing our hemisphere will require a much bigger navy to blockade South America.
The bottom line is that coddling domestic producers behind the padded walls of 50% tariffs makes them more willing to buy off the eco-gangsters and their featherbedding union masters, a win/win for producer and parasites alike. The only loser is the DIYer trying to wire his garage. Maybe now, his only option is shivering in winter.
Coddling “Made in America” by federal helicopter parents is a surefire way to screw up people. It isn’t good policy in raising children nor in the making of prosperity.

Are you tired as I am of being lectured to in ads? The normalization of a morbidly obese kid in a hotel ad. Sexual transgressiveness throughout the commercial breaks. A major bank constantly reminding us of how they use our mortgage payments and savings and checking deposits to reinflate the 2008 financial crisis. Car companies showing us how slavish they are to the kind of people who have destroyed California’s grid and economy, and the government who has become their handmaiden, by trying to sell us on range anxiety. The list goes on and on.
Now, at last, we the sane get a two-fer. American Eagle Jeans gave us a smoking hot lass in a smoking hot car burning rubber. Take that Bud Light!

Social Manias (Wikipedia): mass movements which periodically sweep through societies. They are characterized by an outpouring of enthusiasm, mass involvement and millenarian goals. They are contagious social epidemics, and as such they should be differentiated from mania in individuals.

It’s Wikipedia. Take it for what it’s worth. Nonetheless, the words generally hit the mark about a defining characteristic of our times: our self-conceit. We have convinced ourselves that we are smarter and wiser basically because we have instant access to nearly everything written, said, and done, which in reality means that we access no more than a molecule of it, the stuff that caters to our biases. Rather, instant communication has made us easily triggered as we congregate into zealous groupings of fellow believers in the unbelievable. Smart phones have nothing to do with making us smart. They’ve made us stupid, and armed with a heightened capacity to rally around our stupidity. More commonly, instant connectivity has produced a flurry of just-add-water social manias.

She went from vocally pro-choice and a 2020 Biden supporter to DeSantis and a scourge of the “woke” (see NPR interview in #1) in four years. She’s a contrarian in regards to current trends but also against her past self. For me, that’s integrity.
Take three of the hottest topics paralyzing the public conversation today: climate change, transgenderism, and Trump-o-mania. First, who thunk it possible that an emotionally troubled teenager, Greta Thunberg, would be elevated to the Jeremiah of our times? How’s that possible? It can happen when nearly every natural phenomenon is fed into the mania vortex of climate change, something simplistic enough for an addled youngster.

Think about this omnibus excuse – climate change – as you watch it. Lefty politicians are able to duck responsibility for poor wild land management practices while pursuing utopian social engineering schemes instead of focusing on keeping the lights on, streets and neighborhoods safe, maintaining roads, water at the tap, collecting the garbage, and schooling that actually enhances cognitive abilities – the Main Street stuff of government. Instead, anything bad is shoved into the climate-change worm hole: droughts in a windy drought-prone climate (Mediterranean), firestorms in overgrown and deadened wildlands that seemed to be intentionally groomed for combustibility if it wasn’t for simple and willful neglect. Can it get any more insane?
Human agency in this schema only counts if it can be assigned as the cause – not them and their policies, of course – and always tied to a grand theory that denounces you and I for having a life independent of their direction. We are said to be the cause of Katrina in 2015, not the corrupt, incompetent, and lazy state and local officeholders who neglected the levees in a city below sea level. Yes, insanity rules, alongside the influence of Greta.
Nature will hand to them an unending stream of pretexts for meddling in our lives, nature being nature. The latest made-to-order excuse came via the Guadalupe River flash flood of July 4th with 121 dead, 170 still missing. The “Texas Flash Flood Alley” area that stretches in a southwest arc from Dallas through Austin to the Rio Grande is described by the Lower Colorado River Authority as having “one of the greatest risks for flash floods in the United States” (see #2, #3). Of course, for the maniacs, large numbers of people filling recreational sites on a holiday in a region prone to flash flooding, the river rising 25 feet in a mere 2 hours in the early morning, at a time of year conducive for it, had nothing to do with it. For the unhinged, its’s SUVs, Big Oil, affordable and reliable energy. Hmmmmm.

Flash Flood Alley lived up to its reputation leaving grieving parents and relatives. It’s too horrifying to contemplate. Pray for God’s solace for the grieving.
It’s not a time to politicize nature. Yet, some of us do it, and ignore the history of, for instance, the 1900 Galveston hurricane and flood (8,000-12,000 died) or the San Antonio floods of 1913 (180 died) and 1921 (220). Right now, the quest for political power trumps all (no pun intended). It’s easy to do once climate change becomes embedded in our mental architecture. The millenarian side of the social mania soon kicks in to bully by edict the entire population into the preferred lifestyles of the true believers.
Deep inside every true believer lies a budding totalitarian. If you’re old-school enough to believe that chromosomes matter, you and your kids will be ostracized, hopefully not in a gulag. How did we go from dating, the prom, and childhood innocence to doctor-assisted chemical and surgical mutilation, sometimes without parental knowledge or consent?
It’s baffling, until one notices the ubiquity of cell phones around 2013/14 and the simultaneous appearance of gender anxiety, especially among pre-teen and teen girls (see #4). The connection is highly suggestive. What we have are the makings of a social mania, a contagion. The sudden rise of it is astonishing, and can’t be explained by sole reliance on the LGBTQ+ lobby’s favorite cause: children are freer to announce their “gender fluidity”. Is it actually the “freedom” or the viral spread of the notion of that “freedom”?
Colin Wright, evolutionary biologist at the Manhattan Institute, is an astute observer of the transgender scene. He cites research that unsurprisingly shows California to be a hotbed of youthful transgenderism. “Sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants and transgendered youth means more of both (see #5). Youth in the state between the ages of 13 and 17 are identifying as transgender at a rate 38% higher than the national average. Middle and upper middle-income communities in the state with a major university, like Davis, are keenly susceptible. One sample of youth in the Davis Joint Union School District expressed trans identities at “nearly 4.3 times the national average, and 3 times California’s average” (see #6). In a state already governed by the Left’s idea of anything goes, the surge is likely due to something other than “freedom”. Could it be that the notion spread at the speed of digital bytes across cell towers to your daughter’s TikTok app on the cell phone that you provided her from your family plan?
More than gender confusion can transit the digital pipeline. Zany fan clubs can quickly coalesce around an online celebrity. Donald Trump flooded the digital airwaves in 2015-16 with no real claim to fame other than his celebrity. From then on, Trump, Inc., was sidelined in the minds of most people. If your teenagers have those cell phones sticking out of their back pockets as they stroll around campus, so do the likes of Paul Gosar (R, Arizona), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R, Georgia), and Lauren Boebert (R, Colorado). So does your grandpa and grandma and mom and dad. MAGA goes viral. The attempted assassination of Donald Trump in Butler in 2024 was caught on many more cameras than Reagan’s near-death experience in 1981 – Trump’s occurring before a crowd of thousands, each person with the A/V and broadcast power of CBS News.

His stage presence is magnified to a part of the population degraded and abandoned by the self-anointed “better people”, of those whose wealth and status insulate them from the consequences of their actions and beliefs, and are almost invariably condescending and of the Left. Peggy Noonan wrote eloquently about this growing class of the culturally dispossessed in 2016 in “Trump and Rise of the Unprotected” (see #7). Trump scratched their itch and the rabid fan club MAGA was born.
This is a mania, emotive and reactionary, for people suffering under another form of bigotry. People without an appetite for haute cuisine and lefty/progressive views, who live in the “wrong” zip codes, who believe in the Bible and not the denizens of the faculty lounge, who own guns and a V-8 pickup, who work by the hour, and have no appetite for the scolding of the pampered set in their leafy suburban homes, lofty Manhattan flats, gentrified brownstones, insulated behind the walls of their gated HOA, and tightly, socially cocooned with others like them.
MAGA is rooted in more than Trump. For that reason, a “cult of personality” is inadequate in explaining its emergence. It’s more of a fan club around Trump because he captures their angst. Yet, they’d suffer severe anxiety if Trump should ever find common cause with the immigration/regulation/taxation/transgender agenda of the California Democratic Party. Celebrity fan clubs can be volatile, especially if the object of affection should turn out to be a child molester, which in this context would be politically analogous to Trump becoming squishy in the culture war. Watch some self-anointed MAGA mouthpieces go bonkers over Trump’s decision to support Ukraine. Betrayal can be disorienting, dizzying. Keep a close eye on family members so disposed.
Around the dawn of the new millennium, my wife, son, nephew, and I packed 2 canoes for 5+ days on the Wild and Scenic Upper Missouri River, reliving the Lewis and Clark expedition. At the campfire, I read passages from the Lewis and Clark journals at the places on the river where the events occurred. In one location were the so-called buffalo jumps, places where Native Americans stampeded a herd over a cliff, harvesting some of the carcasses and leaving the rest to rot. The Native Americans triggered a few at the front and led the rest over the precipice. A few influencers were enough to spell doom to the rest. Sound familiar?
Herd opinions, herd confusion, viral manic-depression. These features of our time are spiked by the cocooning made possible by Googling and cell towers. It’s proof that technology has little to do with making us better people. In fact, it can bring out the inner demons of our nature (as opposed to Lincoln’s “better angels”). Just look at the peaceful-but-violent happenings in L. A.

Major elements of the Right and Left are completely unhinged. Crazy has been institutionalized. In Freud-speak, the superego and ego have been short-circuited and it’s a clear path to the raw id.
On the Right, something happened in the time frame from the 2008 Tea Party to the MAGA of today. It actually took a short seven years (2008-2015). What had started out as a call for a smaller government of lower taxes and less regulation, an advocacy of a return to our governmental roots, had somehow morphed into a cathartic cry, a demand for a rhetorical middle finger, an enthusiasm for stick-it-to-the-libs political theater. Thus, we get a continual stream of owning-the-libs YouTube videos; we get Donald Trump and his MAGA in all its bombast and incoherence. It feels good to watch and hear Trump crudely insult anybody not-Trump or Charlie Kirk in his well-choreographed, rapid-fire schtick verbally dismantling a mental adolescent without the public practice. It’s Lebron James against the weekend warrior. It’s fun, it feels good, but how healthy is it?

The Right “wins”, but what have they won? A trade war against the world? A cuddling with anti-American thugs? A fusillade of verbal tirades against our friends and allies? The cavorting with union thugs? A silly nibbling at our spending habits (DOGE, a banal assault on “waste, fraud, and abuse”) while ignoring the drunken sailors of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid who are pell-mell driving us over the cliff? Does any of this make any sense? Of course not.
On the Left, they’ve got all the political theater of Donald Trump at his worst, and more, much more. They’ve got Antifa, antisemitism, racism as “anti-racism” (DEI, CRT, etc.), campus mayhem, a summer of riots, keffiyeh-clad street goons armed with guns and Molotov cocktails, LGBTQAI+ gangsters, Bernie bros, the neo-Marxism of neo-Marxist professors, The Squad, AOC’s babblings, and a monopoly on the cultural commanding heights to propagate the cognitive filth. I could go on, but your eyes would glaze over.

For them, something happened from the time of Harry Truman, Adlai Stevenson, George Kennan, and JFK to The 1619 Project, to Trayvon Martin/Michael Brown/George Floyd, to maybe 2014, maybe 60 years. “The long march through the institutions” of the neo-Marxist Frankfurt School (google it) took a little longer to fully dominate the synapses of the stewards of the Democratic Party. After that, it didn’t take long for them to replicate MAGA – a middle finger but only on the left hand – and take it to Spinal Tap’s “11”, their preferred behavioral stance.
When the Left resorts to political theater, it’s often of the lethal variety. Talk to store owners across the country in 2020 and the Holocaust survivors of today marching for mercy for the Hamas-held hostages. Many of the innocent end up walking on rubble, maimed, dead, or being treated in burn wards. “Free Palestine” has replaced “Allahu Akbar”.
The fringes of the political continuum are an unholy mess. I don’t expect darlings of the Right like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, Charlie Kirk (sometimes), a chunk of the Right’s podcast world, et al, to rush out and praise Ukraine’s amazing drone strike against Russia’s strategic airfields (see #1) or Israel’s sudden decapitation of Hezbollah with exploding pagers and airstrikes. Such imaginative gutsiness on the part of the Ukrainians and Israelis is hardly applauded in such circles. The fact that Ukraine and Israel occupy the front lines in the defense of western civilization scarcely crosses their radar screen.

Their tunnel vision is America First, which really is America Alone, and America Weaker. In their myopic minds, we are not to have a foreign policy till every American problem, real or imagined, addressable by government or not, has been eradicated. Till then, our oceans will protect us, they assume . . . despite the fact that illiterate jihadists wielding box cutters, strategic bombers, missiles, high-altitude surveillance ballons, nuclear subs, drones, and satellites have shown them to be irrelevant or just another conduit, not a barrier, for those who wish to do us harm. Faith in geographical features is not a substitute for strategy.
I also don’t expect the elders of the donkey party to turn over a new leaf from the neo-Marxist infestation in their midst since Barack Obama ushered it into the party’s inner sanctum. They are just as fearful of their fanatics as the GOP is of the MAGA horde lurking in their venues. Both cohorts at the fringes cause the parties’ “adults in the room” to cower in fear.
For donkey party loyalists, their notion of reform after their defeat at the hands of the orange man is to be shriller about what got them booted in the first place: boys now girls/girls now boys, border erasure, a state-sponsored onslaught on the people’s quality of life in pursuit of environmentalist fairy tales, a morbidly obese government that only promises the déjà vu of 1980s Argentina, etc. – the same stuff that drives average people nuts. They don’t get it, and probably won’t till a few more debacles finally detox them.
For a GOP still hitched to an impulsive and bullheaded chieftain, they are left to be dragged along in whatever direction his impulses take them. They are left to stunningly embrace Big Labor’s robber barons after spending a career condemning them. No “right to work” for these sycophants. Former free traders are sounding like zealous converts to the cult of Smoot-Hawley. If Regan were alive today, he’d have to leave the Republican Party as the Democratic Party left him in the 1950s.
Watch Trump castigate the Courts, his courts, since many of these judges were appointed by him, including the current 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court. They were chosen for their adherence to the rule of law – original intent – not the rule of Trump. The Rule of Trump is strict obedience to his every wish. In a few upcoming cases, he may come to understand that the rule of law is not the rule of Trump. He may well learn that “emergencies” are not construed to be a carte blanche takeover of Congress’s trade powers in Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 (Trump, it’s in Article I, not Article II.). The vast body of immigration law has some due process provisions in limited circumstances; the whole thing does not fall under Trump caprice. The presidency does not have temples with altars waiting to receive sacrifices to them.
As for the Democratic Party, their temples have in their inner sanctums, not open to the prying eyes of the general public, altars to Karl Marx and his apostles. He goes unmentioned but is the guiding light for the party beliefs and actions. Little that they propose escapes the ideological straitjacket of his junk thought. Their Don Quixote revolution against imaginary oppressors has little room for reality, culture, restraint, law and constitutions. The crusade ends up where it always has: a disaster for all concerned. Look at California. Look at North Korea. Look at post-Soviet Russia.
So, here we are, buffeted by fringe crazies. MAGA follows their guru in lockstep and the donkey party can’t escape the neo-Marxist mind-fog of its shrillest members. Interesting times.

Who’s Leszek Balcerowicz? He was Poland’s Finance Minister in the country’s first non-communist government, then served twice as Deputy Prime Minister (1989–1991, 1997–2001) and as Chairman of the National Bank of Poland (2001–2007). He and his wife of 47 years, Ewa Balcerowicz, are economists. He oversaw Poland’s economic reforms from communist collectivism to free markets and democratic capitalism. By all accounts, it worked, while it failed in Russia, possibly owing to Russia’s penchant for sclerotic autocracy and state-empowered cronyism (let’s leave that for another time).
Why bring him up? He is the counterpoint to Trump and his bunch, the Fox News stable grafted onto the executive branch. I doubt seriously that Americans voted for isolationism and protectionism. Tariffs and withdrawal from the world didn’t show up in any polls of the public prior to November 4. Yet, those are what we are getting. Reluctance to defend the international order is evident in stories of Trump’s people pressuring Israel not to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities and some voices in the administration expressing a willingness to cut Ukraine and NATO adrift. Protectionism is the sole remaining root for Trump’s tariff war on the world after every other explanation is reduced to incoherence. Balcerowicz’s story is a fresh breath of sanity in our domestic maelstrom of security and economic claptrap.
Balcerowicz faced a tall order in 1989 with the collapse of Poland’s communist regime. Collectivism, once begun, is like drug addiction. The recovery is hell, but eventually a healthier person is restored. Free market “shock therapy” was initiated, tough times ensued, Poland stuck with it, and today Poland is rivalling Japan in per capita income. It’s a lesson well worth remembering as we lurch toward Trump-inspired collectivist protectionism.
Heck, we can’t even reform our bankrupting entitlements (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid) without a political bloodbath. Trump promises to do nothing about them, and is trying to centrally plan his autarkic economy through his “most beautiful word in the English language”, tariffs. Businesses are watching as their decades-long economic arrangements are hammered into rubble and markets tumble.
A marked contrast is Poland. Per capita (per person) GDP is a good measure of economic health. In 1990 it was Brazil-sized at $12,810, $4,000 behind Mexico’s. In 2023 it stands at $43,585, a mere $2,500 short of Japan’s (see #1). Japan, once the darling of industrial-policy Democrats with its state-management in The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), and an unacknowledged centerpiece of Trump’s economic outlook, has flatlined for three decades. Demographically, it is in the midst of social suicide with a 1.20 fertility rate, and now with an economy to match. Trump is eager to repeat the performance with his own MITI run out of the White House and his executive orders, something akin to imperial decrees.
Oh, 2026 is the year that Poland is projected to surpass Japan in per person wealth. Barring Trump dragging the world’s economy into the toilet, aka 1930, the future looks bright for a country near the front lines abutting Putin’s horde. Not so for us.
Poland shows the way forward, not Donald Trump. If only the Republicans had the guts to study the career of Leszek Balcerowicz. Instead, as they play footsie with Donald Trump, the tumbling securities markets forecast dark clouds. Sure, bear and bull markets do not always presage a nation’s future fortunes, but sometimes they do. All the elements of serious economic disruption are present: massive government meddling, Trump’s demand for irresponsible monetary policy to cover his tracks, shattered business relationships, mammoth uncertainty, and the beginning of the pullback of capital. If capital goes into hiding, we’re in serious trouble, Great Depression territory.
In the runup to our near future expect the demagoguery of all the Wall Street vs. Main Street blather to take center stage. The class warfare of J.D. Vance links rhetorical arms with AOC/Bernie Sanders. Is it all that inconceivable for our Vice-President to show up at AOC’s next “Fight Oligarchy” rally? One has to wonder. They might have to change the title to “Fight Wall Street”. Mmmmm, “Occupy Wall Street”? Are we there yet?
A simple economic lesson will be taught to our President and his palace coterie, while the rest of us live it. Wall Street and Main Street are as intertwined as Ford and its supply chain. They can’t occupy insular realms, bubbles, silos. A withholding of capital sets off dominoes that careen onto Main Street. Investors seek to avoid Trump-driven risks by not exposing their wealth (capital) to his whims. Following the inevitable chain of events, less capital means less maintenance and growth of enterprises which translates into less business for the diner and hardware store on Main Street.
It’s a lesson well understood by any economist worth their salt. Thank goodness Poland trusted theirs, led by Leszek Balcerowicz, and stayed the course. We, in America, would rather hitch our wagon to our erratic president, and his merry band of Fox News alumni, all adhering to his faulty presumptions. It’s great for Poland, bad for us.

Sometime in early 2027, President Trump will probably be impeached . . . again. Why? When the party in power botches things, they’re normally punished at the polls — “It’s the economy, stupid!” Inflation, shortages, business closings, people thrown out of work, recessions/depressions, etc., won’t make for a winning message. That bodes ill for the already impeachment-prone Trump, leaving aside the question of the legitimacy of any effort to remove him from office.
People are already lining up to do the favor, or predicting it. The reliably extremist Democrat Al Green (the one removed for disrupting President Trump’s March 4 speech to Congress) announced in February (see #1), “This president is unfit.” Further in the well of the House he said, “I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done.” Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon agrees. Four days after the November 4 election, Bannon augured (see #2),
“Hakeem Jeffries could be, will be, the speaker of the House in two years. And the first thing he will do in the early days of 2027 is move to impeach Donald Trump. Trust me. They’re gonna put $10 billion in back of him [to take the House]. They have nobody else.”
Trump is behaving in ways to prove them right. People vote their pocketbook. It’s more than a cliché. It’s true. Stake out a position that leads to harming the voters’ children and personal fortunes and they will send you packing. Biden and Kamala Harris, et al, are proof of concept. Trump is determined to join them.
I can’t think of a more politically self-destructive act than laying waste to a good portion of the economy just in time for the 2026 midterms. His tariff war – 10% across the board, 25% on our neighbors, potentially sky high on everybody else, and the concomitant uncertainty from all the flip flops – will wreak havoc on everything, maybe with the exception of most food processing. We’ll have food, but to hell with an affordable car, or truck, or SUV, or van, or 18-wheeler, if you can find one. Expect long lines at the grocery store filled with people holding food stamp (SNAP) EBT cards.
To bring home the consequences of the Trump foolishness, let’s just take a look at the rear undercarriage of an “American-made” SUV as it passes from the U.S. to Mexico, to Canada, and back to the U.S. The inputs for just the suspension strut towers go from Pennsylvania to Coahuila, Mexico, to Livonia, Michigan, for final assembly. The differential gearbox begins with aluminum from Quebec, then to casting in Coahuila, then for machining in Ontario, Canada, and then to North Carolina for assembly. The rubber bushings for the control arms starts with synthetic rubber from Monterrey, Mexico, and then to Iowa for their attachment to the control arms. The suspension’s cradle is from Kentucky, and other pieces such as the trailing blades and brackets emanate from Kentucky, Ontario, and Puebla, Mexico.
Assembly of the various parts into a rearend occurs at Vaughan, Ontario, and Detroit. Then it is rushed to Kansas City, Mo., Fort Wayne, Ind., and Windsor, Ontario, etc., for attachment to the final product. Under Trump’s tariff regime, the final product will be hemorrhaging blood from his tariffs. It’s insane.
Why the circuitous route? Doesn’t it seem unnecessarily complicated? Those questions would arise from your typically myopic and autarkic central planner, people like Peter Navarro and Donald Trump. This process pencils out in terms of value-added and cost-benefit according to the people with skin in the game. That’s what a market does when allowed to operate freely.
Why not just disentangle the various paths and make it all occur in the U.S.? Go ahead and try. Uprooting the suppliers and their plants will come at a terrible cost and take years. In the interim, people will be going to the polls to vote against the wreckage. The complexity of disentanglement was nicely expressed by Flavio Volpe, president of Canada’s Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, when he compared it to an omelet: “You can’t unscramble it once it’s done.”
Trump is Don Quixote charging windmills. Biden wanted to shove us into very expensive golf carts masquerading as family sedans. With Trump, even that screwball option may not be available. I don’t know about you but I’m keeping my 10-year-old Tundra and 9-year-old Venza. Buying new ones is likely to be a nightmare. Expect the entire auto industry to pull back as well. Now that’s the making of economic hard times.
Will the Democrats finally succeed in adding Donald Trump’s scalp to their lance this time? Well, as they say, third time is the charm.

“Lies and victimhood make evil possible.” — quote attributed to Dennis Prager
Well, maybe not evil, or maybe so, but lies and victimhood are certainly not a recipe for success. The Left has long been in the grip of victimhood. It’s the base alloy for its DEI, CRT, critical legal theory, and all its “systematic” ideologies that have plagued us since they became Democratic Party dogma in the 20th and into the 21st centuries. Now, the Right has its own version in MAGA. And as John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival sang, “I see a bad moon rising”.
Why the pessimism? The Right morphed from being a correction to the Left’s manias to a thoroughgoing embrace of one of their big ones, victimhood. It’s in the MAGA title – Make America Great Again – meaning that America is a victim of a dizzying array of charlatans and miscreants, foreign and domestic. It’s a recurring script, pathetic as it may be, nothing new in the history of the world.
In that sense, we are busy making ourselves not “exceptional”. It’s not inevitable. We choose to be that way by electing leaders and absorbing their dark frame of mind. Donald Trump’s tariff war on the world is a play on this depressing display of American victimhood.
What’s more, it is based on falsehoods. The villain is said to be free trade, whether under the initials NAFTA or TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) or GATT or WTO, and we are said to be chumps, patsies, and victims in the story. Yet, for allegedly being fools, we are outpacing the rest of the world. Trump’s “Great Again” schtick actually misses the boat, and is working feverishly to have us join the rest of the G7 in missing the boat.
Let’s count the ways. The UK, Germany, and Japan have flatlined in GDP growth for at least 5 years or more (three decades for Japan). China’s 30-year spurt of phenomenal growth is levelling off, which is not surprising since they started from essentially zero; they’re export reliant economy is highly cyclical; and the central planning of industrial policy is famous for spectacular highs followed by spectacular lows, like a meth addict. The Soviet Union had 80 years of it and it imploded in the course of a week in 1991.
As for “Great Again”, we are already great and getting greater as the others languish. So says The Economist in its October 2024 report titled, “The American economy has left other rich countries in the dust” (see #1). How so? At the start of NAFTA, we were about 40% of total GDP of the G7 countries. Today, we’re 50%. Globally, we were 21% of the world’s economy in 2012; today finds us at 26%.
Personal measures of wealth show us to be unsurpassed. Back to The Economist (see #1 and #2), “Average wages in America’s poorest state, Mississippi, are higher than the averages in Britain, Canada and Germany.” We’re also more productive per worker. Canada’s is 70% of ours. China is a third (and falling). If this makes us “chumps”, we should pray for the condition to continue.
So, Trump’s answer is a tariff war on the world and more caterwauling about our victimhood. Go figure. On April 2, he marched up to the microphone waving a piece of agitprop titled “Foreign Trade Barriers” as if any of it matters. Ironically, these alleged foreign government manipulations of trade haven’t made them any richer as we sailed past them. “Foreign Trade Barriers” is irrelevant in the big yacht race of life.
Trump and MAGA world can’t accept the fact that our economy is different, as different as our 1890 economy was from colonial times. Ag shrunk dramatically as a slice of the American economy back then, so an 1890 Trump and Peter Navarro (Trump’s sage of trade) would be running around pushing William T. Sherman’s “40 acres and a mule” as a plank in their “Make America Great Again” campaign. To heck with Rockefeller, Carnegie, Vanderbilt, and Ford; and to heck with 21st-century Navarro’s craze for manufacturing. It would have been stillborn if this dynamic duo had their way at the dawn of American global economic dominance.

21st-century America isn’t a manufacturing basket case. The value of our manufacturing is larger today than it was 1990. We just employ fewer people as we manufacture more higher-end goods. As Rich Lowry puts it in his piece (see #2), “As we have lost jobs in manufacturing (5 million since 1990), we’ve picked them up in services (nearly 12 million) and in transportation and logistics (more than 3 million).” More tech and aerospace and less textiles and shoes. Those service jobs don’t concentrate around the burger-flipper sector. If they did, they’d be the most expensive burger-flippers since Ray Kroc, since the birth of the Whopper, that is Wagyu-paddied Whoppers.
Trade barriers or no, the proof is in the pudding. But Navarro doesn’t eat pudding, at least not the kind of pudding produced by our economy.
Navarro, Trump’s buddy in protectionism, has always been a loud advocate of central planning, government management of economic activity, in its reincarnation in Democrat neo-socialist “industrial policy”, and more. Before he joined the Trump circus, Navarro was part of the emerging California Democrat “establishment” in the 1990s that would come to dominate the state down to the present day.
By 1998, the Democrat tone for California was set in the words of people like Navarro (see #4). Eco-manias and growth-control was the zeitgeist of his campaigns for elective offices in San Diego in the 1990s. He headed an activist group called “Prevent Los Angelization Now (PLAN)”, of San Diego, and pushed almost any measure at hand to restrict the housing supply, such as preventing migration into the city, growth-control ordinances, tight controls on sewer and water hookups, fees, fees, and more fees, etc. It’s a familiar story that began in Petaluma in the 1960s and spread up and down the state’s populous coastal plain.
Navarro was hip deep in branding the word “developer” as something akin to “child molester”. Without his type of apparatchiks at the helm of local government power, according to Navarro, developers “will leave air pollution, overcrowded schools, underpoliced streets, sewer systems bursting at their seams, and traffic jams that can (and often do in California) make grown men cry.”
Today, Californians are crying, despondent over their inability to afford shelter and having to flee to other states not so beholden to the California Navarros. California has a serious housing shortage, duhhh! Getting approval to nail two studs together is a nightmare in the state. Decades of hostility to supply has attracted some roosting chickens. The chronically constrained supply has propelled the median rent in the state to $2,850, 33% higher than the national average (see #5).
Navarro’s legacy is Democrat Assemblyman Corey Jackson of Riverside. Jackson recently proposed a bill that would allow college students to sleep in their cars because many can’t afford California rent (see #7). People that think like Navarro have engineered a housing market that has relegated students to their cars. Expect student parking lots to resemble homeless encampments. What Navarro helped to bring about in California, he promises for the entire nation when Trump assigned to him the role of influencer to tinker around in the nation’s economic relations with the world.
It’s not that Trump is unaware of Navarro’s inclinations. He agrees with Navarro. Trump and Navarro have a childlike zero-sum view of the world. Bill Fulton, former head of San Diego planning, noticed the symmetry between Trump’s view of trade and slow-growthers like Navarro (see #3): “More development creates losers as well as winners, so you’d better box out the bad development or at least make those developers pay through the nose.” A rising tide raising all boats, or a growing pie that unavoidably means bigger slices for everyone, is inconceivable to someone like Navarro. Thanks to Trump, Navarro has the opportunity to muck up the nation’s economy like he helped to do for the housing supply in California.
Steve Bannon
And he’s doing it along with another fellow traveler in MAGA world, Steve Bannon. Navarro wants to centrally plan trade with his beloved tariffs. Bannon wants to bash the rich with tax increases. Here’s Bannon (see #6):
“That’s why it’s so important to not extend the tax cuts for the wealthy and actually do more tax cuts for working class people. We do this, that is a fundamental shift politically that will cement in the foundational elements for a 1932-type realignment.”
Update to Steve Bannon (see #8): the top 20% of income earners pay 83.6% of federal income taxes. As for the bottom rungs straying into the middle and working classes, the bottom 20% only get money out of the system. Their income tax rate is negative, -4.3%. The next 20% from the bottom pays essentially 0% at 0.1%. What does Bannon want, out and out income confiscation? That would place him in the company of Lenin.
Why not just vote for Democrats? MAGA is associated with the wrong party. Bannon believes, like Navarro, like Democrats, that government can micromanage us into utopia. Bannon opines on the tips, overtime, and Social Security pandering while bashing other Republicans as follows, “He’s [Trump] furthering the economics of working-class and middle-class America, and it cements the fact that the Republicans are not the country club Republicans of the Bush junta.” So, according to Bannon and any other socialist who has graced the public stage, government is the fount of all good things, and no need to pull the rug back on a ravaged housing supply and American economy as they feed The Wealth of Nations and Reaganomics into the shredder.
Such is the nature of Populism. It is the repository of crackpots, of anyone who wishes to steer government bennies to favored victims, while making real victims of those seen in a lesser light. Now we see the real home of zero-sum and it is in city hall, the state capitol, Washington, D.C., and the myriads of agencies and government offices scattered across the fruited plain. A favored few demographics are rewarded at the expense of the vast millions. None of it works, and results in the loaded U-Hauls exiting California and thousands thrown out of work by enterprises starved for capital and nonfunctioning supply chains.
Senator Russell B. Long put it best when he said in 1973, “Don’t tax you, don’t tax me, tax the fellow behind the tree.” Welcome to the Populism of Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon, and the erratic and incoherent Donald J. Trump.
It’s more than Populism that ties them together. It’s the pathetic wallowing in victimhood. It blinds a person to a reality that isn’t as dismal as these lunkheads make it out to be. It heaps blame on others and diminishes personal responsibility. In a nutshell, it is as Dennis Prager put it, “Lies and victimhood make evil possible.”
Yes, the pity party is getting tiresome.
