The Beast

College presidents' skewered testimony raises question: What do they do?

Dr. Naomi Wolf Announces NEW BOOK "Facing the Beast: Courage, Faith and Resistance in a New Dark ...

You’ve all seen it or at least heard of it: the congressional testimony of the presidents of Harvard, UPenn, and MIT, particularly under the questioning of Elise Stefanik (R-NY).  In monotone answers, as if coached by lawyers or PR experts, these people refused to declare that antisemitic speech calling for genocide of Jews by staff and students violates their schools’ official code of conduct (see video below).  Their cagey responses say much about them and more so about the educational rot on their campuses and in their heads.  It’s as if a malign beast has descended upon these places.  Parents, beware.

What “beast”?  The thing is more than a personification of evil.  It’s the influence of ideas that can inspire people to do evil things.  Some ideas are inherently evil.  Some ideas are “beasts”, mostly because they contradict our nature.  They bring out the worst in us and cause our demise.  How do we know them?  A biblical warning: “Ye shall know them by their fruits” (Matthew 7:16).

Today’s “beast” is the Marxist oppressor/oppressed claptrap.  It’s everywhere in the quasi-mystical jargon in DEI, ESG, CRT, the politics of identity, etc., and throughout K to grad school.  There aren’t many institutions not infected by it.  Your kids are getting a steady dose of it whenever they step into a classroom, watch TV, go to a movie, and cruise the internet on their cellphone.

The “beast” has a family tree.  The 60’s counterculture was a hip version of an older belief system, the same one that is now bombarding your kids from age 5 to 26.  German Marxist agitator Rudi Dutschke in 1967 preached a “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” strategy, the so-called Long March through the institutions.  In other words, he proposed that the zealots conquer the system from within rather than tear it down – co-opt it through infiltration.  He rejiggered one of his Marxist inspirations’ (Antonio Gramsci) revolutionary “war of position” language from a few decades before.  And, boy, did he and they succeed as evidenced by the prevarications on display in last week’s congressional testimony.  The college presidents can’t bring themselves to condemn the now common Dutschke/Gramsci/Marcuse grotesqueries replete in their lecture halls and on their grounds.

Parents, are you sure that you are not bankrolling the ruination of your child’s mind in a leftist finishing school?  And all this so your kids can have the prestige in possessing something that is quickly losing its prestige?  How does that compute?

The degree and campus experience are rapidly losing their value.  The indoctrination and subsequent lack of rigor cannot be hidden for long.  Dunces and extremists with degrees cannot interminably escape the withering eye of reality.  Every employer will come to realize the truth in “Ye shall know them by their fruits”.  Statue-topplers aren’t likely to keep the sewer system in operation.

Send your kids and money elsewhere.  Please watch the short clip.

Have We Lost Our Mind, Or What?

Ex-NHS psychologists warn children are being over-diagnosed, over-medicated for gender dysphoria ...

Some people believe in things that are completely nuts.  Look at “gender-affirming care” and the adults in positions of authority who have bought into it.  Think about it: the self-diagnosis of a toddler or tween is sufficient to invoke a permanent life-altering trajectory as the result of a medical intervention that screams malpractice.  Despite the indoctrination that is mislabeled as counseling, the kid will never be the same, either emotionally or physically, and can’t return to their former self.

After the victims’ exposure to the counseling/indoctrination, Lupron (AbbVie’s chemical castration drug and puberty blocker), cross-sex hormones, and surgeries, we’re starting to see regret in the form of the word “detransitioner”.  Later comes the realization, after all of the changes to the body and mind, that the tween’s rash self-diagnosis for sex-transition can’t be fully undone.  Cutting to the chase, this whole thing is c-r-a-z-y!

Of course, the response of the adult enthusiasts in the transition Borg when confronted with any reluctance to the treatment is a resort to the rhetorical equivalent of Defcon 1 (nuclear war is imminent or has already begun) – “Do you want a dead daughter or an alive son?”  Heck, the affected are still committing suicide . . . after the transition.

I give you three cases of regret: one ends in suicide; the other is ending in a lawsuit; and still another concerns a whistleblower at a gender clinic.

The situation involving David Reimer (the full account below) will turn out to be a refutation of the behaviorist’s chief insight, that social conditions overwhelmingly define a person’s development.  It was believed by some that the influences of biology can be replaced by the social engineering of “expert” interventions.  Reimer was thrust into the trap of a psychologist’s effort – John Money, a Johns Hopkins University psychologist – to reengineer David from a boy to girl.  It didn’t work.  David committed suicide at age 38.

May be an image of 5 people, bangs, child and people smiling
David Reimer as Brenda (l) and the Reimer family
May be a black-and-white image of 1 person
John Money, Johns Hopkins University psychologist

The story begins 8 months after David’s birth in 1965 when his penis was accidentally removed during a surgical procedure.  After consultation with John Money, his parents agreed to interventions to turn David into Brenda.  14 months later, David’s remaining male genitals were removed, artificial and rudimentary female genitals installed, and he started a regular regimen of estrogen injections.  His upbringing as Brenda ensued.

An uneasiness would plague him for the rest of his life.  And then he learned what happened to him.  He would “detransition” back to David and replace his artificial female genitalia with artificial male genitalia.  He got married, adopted 3 children, but continued to be consumed by depression up to the moment of his fateful decision to take his life.

He was misdiagnosed as an adult with “gender dysphoria” because he wasn’t “in the wrong body” so to speak – or maybe he was, put there by an “expert” whose ideological inclinations would prevent him from realizing the obvious truth that XY chromosomes signal the release of male hormones to the body and brain.  The potential for harm is as great for the modern version of the John Money approach, “gender-affirming care”.

That brings me to the case filing of Chloe Cole v. Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Inc, in early 2023.  At age 13, Chloe fell into the arms of Kaiser’s gender team. According to her filing (see below), “a team of doctors (i.e., the Defendants) . . . decided to perform a mutilating, mimicry sex change experiment on Chloe.”  Even more damning is the treating practitioners single-minded commitment to one approach – gender-affirming care – without adequately divulging the controversial nature of the treatment, risks, and the shortcomings of much of the research into it.  How could anyone, let alone a 13-year-old, exercise informed consent under the pressure of doctrinaire activists in white smocks?  Chloe’s formal complaint reads,

“Defendants [i.e., Kaiser] obscured and concealed important information such as the following: the conflicting studies in this area; the high quality evidence demonstrating poor mental health outcomes; the existence of only low to very low-quality studies purportedly supporting this treatment; the significant likelihood that desired outcomes would not be attained; the significant possibility of desistence, detransition and regret; and the lack of accurate models for predicting desistence and detransition.”

Chloe Cole

Chloe detransitioned at age 17 and is now seeking legal redress for what can only be described as mental and physical mutilation by a branch of the medical industry that is more beholden to an ideology than real medical science.  It’s nearly as horrific as anything that came out of the German SS Race and Settlement Main Office or the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Anthropology, Human Heredity, and Eugenics of the 1930’s with its fixation on other forms of malevolent flights of fancy under cover of “science”.

Now, other clinics and hospitals have earned suspicion and scrutiny for engaging in practices that can only be described as licensed mutilation.  Jamie Reed, a former pediatric gender clinician at Washington University Transgender Center, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, blew the whistle on the hasty and obsessive herding of minors into gender-affirming care.

May be an image of 1 person
Jamie Reed

Former employee of St. Louis transgender clinic reaffirms allegations of misconduct • Missouri ...

Even the New York Times, frequently dismissive of such charges, has confirmed much of Reed’s story.  They validated many instances of the facility’s staff jumping to transition counseling and testosterone before any underlying emotional issues were addressed.  It became commonplace at the clinic, facing a social contagion of gender dysphoria among adolescents, particularly young girls, to reach for short cuts in processing the horde with a reliance on highly dubious outside examiners and the snap push into cross-sex hormones and the indoctrination of the patient into accepting that they’re the opposite of their chromosomes.

Manias based on dubious “truths” aren’t unusual in history.  Astrology, phrenology (skull shape is determinative of a person’s nature), and bleeding (opening a vein, leeches) were integral elements of medical training and practice.  Pre-Civil War, some races were said to be best suited for subjugation (slavery for instance, John C. Calhoun).  It carried over into Jim Crow.  An incomplete and rudimentary understanding of heredity led to the horrors of eugenics which fed into the Supreme Court’s Oliver Wendell Holmes’ stupefying opinion in Buck v. Bell (1927) – “Three generations of imbeciles are enough.” – and Auschwitz, et al.  Karl Marx was intent on uncovering a “science” of history which, when put into practice in the 20th century, led to over 110 million deaths.  Far from enlightening, some “scientific truths” have been the harbinger of much misery.

Who knows, climate change in its current ideological form may join history’s many delusional offramps from real science.

Meanwhile, the self-diagnosis of tweens as a proper basis for life-altering treatment is farcical.  Euphemisms like “gender-affirming care” can’t hide the ugly reality.  Which leads to another profound question: Why does it seem that the vulnerable – the mentally limited, those powerless in slavery, the subjugated by military conquest, the people stripped of their power of self-defense, children – are chosen to be the guinea pigs?  Harvard grads don’t usually show up in the casualty lists.

Our Revolting Politics Is Making a Lot of Things Revolting

Dylan Mulvaney and Bud Light

Two things are on today’s docket: Vivek Ramaswamy’s star is rising and Bud Light and Target are still crashing.  Regarding the former, Ramaswamy is pandering to the Trumpkins in the GOP.  He’s trying to be a 38-year-old Trump but without the ugliness.  He’s risen to second place in some state polls.  Astonishingly, Bud Light and Target have jumped onto the gender-confusion/teenage-genital-mutilation bandwagon, as if their customers want to hear from them on the culture war.  In both cases, what foolishness.  Who in their right mind would think that any of this would pass the smell test?

Trump’s powerful presence in the GOP is making the party a reflection of his unlikeable persona for a functioning majority of the national electorate.  By that, I mean disliked by those not siloed behind the increasingly constricted walls of MAGA world.  As many Trumpers cling ever so tightly to him with each indictment, other and far more numerous GOP-leaning demographics fly the coop, no matter the imbecilities of the Biden clan on the other side of the political ledger.  Democrats win by making the other guy more detested than them.

Vivek wants the nomination and will say anything to get it.  For him, as an investment guru, everything, including politics, is transactional – i.e., you get something (the nomination) by paying something (pandering to the Trump crowd).  What comes out is pure, unadulterated poppycock.

Have you heard Hugh Hewitt’s interview of Vivek from August 14, 2023 (transcript and audio below)?  Vivek announced to the world a green light for Red Cina to invade Taiwan after 2028.  You heard me right. Imitating his mentor (DJT) in the use of blunt and stark terms, no matter how asinine, he declared,

“I’m being very clear: Xi Jinping should not mess with Taiwan until we have achieved semiconductor independence, until the end of my first term when I will lead us there. And after that, our commitments to Taiwan, our commitments to be willing to go to military conflict, will change after that, because that’s rationally in our self-interest.”

Vivek Ramaswamy talk's Hugh about his new book "Capitalist Punishment." - The Hugh Hewitt Show

There you have it in Ramaswamy’s words: Don’t mess with us until after my term ends and we have transplanted Taiwan Semiconductor and/or a good portion of the world’s semiconductor industry to our shores within reach of our IRS, EPA, and our ascendant neo-Marxists.  After that, Taiwan, my friend, you’re on your own.  Done.

MAGA is thrilled because no more “forever wars”.  A President Ramaswamy looks tough in announcing a four-year delayed abandonment in “Trumpian” words.  Well, for Taiwan, starting in 2029, enjoy the Taipei May Day parades of the People’s Liberation Army.

When pressed by Hewitt about the astounding repercussions, Vivek began repeated non-clarifications with “Let me make myself perfectly clear.”  Making oneself “perfectly clear” is a poker-tell that you’re not going to be clear.  He continued to insist on sending a huge naval force to the area but backed away from the will to use it.  What’s the point?  Thugs need to face real threats, not an armada that would blithely move out of the way for the PLA’s amphibious and aerial assault.  The will to use it must be conveyed along with the deployment of the Pacific Fleet.  Without the will, it’s an empty bluff.

Vivek, try to be something more than talking like Trump while acting like Jimmy Carter, Obama, or Joe Biden.  It isn’t a good look for you, nor is it good for the country.

I would say, “Thank God, this guy isn’t president”, but then I have to glance over at the current occupant.  Whew, what a mess, what a choice.  Sadly, for this investment exec, transactional thinking doesn’t necessarily incorporate strategic calculus, such as the loss of Taiwan producing a gaping hole in the first island chain for the burgeoning PLA Navy to flood the Pacific.  Vivek will do nothing but reinforce among our allies our habit of abandonment when things get messy.  Remember Vietnam, Bill Clinton’s 1990s dithering with Al-Qaeda, Obama’s Iraq pullout and red line in Syria, and Biden’s Afghanistan bugout?  And now Taiwan?

Naval news and analysis: China caught between a green and a blue water navy

Our potential and current friends and allies will certainly remember.  A lack of steadfastness and reliability won’t bode well for alliance-making.  Who’d want to be our friend?

At that point, it will be America alone as the export part of our economy dries up in the face of a cordon of CCP satraps.  If you think that Biden and company is making a hash of our way of life, wait for a President Ramaswamy and his 20-30% hit (value of our exports) to US GDP after his forced retreat to fortress America.  We would be in Great Depression territory.  Speaking of transactional thinking, Vivek’s pandering to the no-more-forever-wars constituency will have real world costs.  We’ll quickly learn the value of alliances as we get crushed under a depression-ignited, debt-fueled, and bulging safety net.

Vivek’s foolishness can be chalked up to youthful rashness.  What’s the excuse for the seasoned big wheels at Anheuser-Busch and Target?  Or, are they “seasoned”, by whom, where?  Who thought that a man (Dylan Mulvaney) trying to compete and look like a bulk of their customers’ wives and girlfriends would be a nice way to expand the Bud Light brand?  Who thought that the family-friendly Target, with many a mother with children in tow, would be an excellent venue to advocate gender confusion and same-sex amory?  It’s unfathomable.

At this time, Bud Light’s sales continue to plummet.  They can’t give away the stuff.  Whereas, at the beginning of the year, it ranked #1.

May be an image of 1 person and text
Alissa Heinerscheid, the Bud Light advertising exec behind the Dylan Mulvaney endorsement

The person most responsible for the debacle was Bug Light’s 39-year-old advertising exec Alissa Heinerscheid.  Her classroom pedigree is impressive: Groton, Harvard, Wharton.  But is such a distinguished pedigree a marker for success for the company and its products?  We’re at a stage in our history when people need to question the idea that business acumen is a product of overhyped degrees from institutions who have been diminishing in excellence for years.

It probably never occurred to Alissa that expanding the brand in one direction could lead to lead to a dramatic contraction in another.  This is a person who was marinated in a cocoon far removed from the lives of the people who buy the goods.  She may know of the average Americans’ way of life, but it’s a kind of knowing absent the intimacy of actually having lived it.  For her, “beer” meant European or craft.  In her rarified social atmosphere, sex rebels are a cute social appurtenance; they’re kind of cool.

However, for the bulk of Bug Light’s consumers, it’s a movement to revolutionize their lives and expose their kids to emotional harm in their crucial developmental years.  They want a beer to drink at the bar-be-cue not one that is curated to advance a disturbing cause.  Who would have thought that in a week someone like Heinerscheid could turn a popular product into an icon of a left-wing cultural revolution?  Bud Light’s sales have dropped for 17 straight weeks.  “Expanding the brand” turned into subtracting the core, and out goes Alissa, and down goes Bud Light.

Target Stock Down After 1 Million Promise to Boycott - Family Policy Alliance

It’s a similar pattern with Target.  Pride Month 2023 in June heralded a drop in sales which continues into the third quarter after the geniuses in the c-suite thought that it was a good idea to plaster the kids’ department in pride flags, introduce a line of “tuck friendly” girls’ swimsuits, and carry children’s products from Abprallen, famous for their Satanist line.  What accounts for what can only be described as bizarre decisions?  Like Bud Light and its determination to link with a TikTok “influencer” for transgenderism, these decisions arise out of people who were acculturated in a peculiar environment at odds to the life lived by most people who’ll never experience the Groton-to-Wharton social pipeline.  The c-suite is simply out of touch, and grossly so.  It’s as if they came from a different planet, and don’t realize it.

Idealized Target board meeting from its website. They’ve certainly got the look of the ignorant and naive.

Both cases are abject lessons in how to clog the bankruptcy courts by making yourself detested.  The quality and affordability of the good or service is made irrelevant.  Simply seen walking from the parking lot into the store, or being seen with the blue can in your fridge, now could brand you as an endorser of extremist causes.

It’s more complicated than “go woke, go broke”.  The turn-off won’t come from the Groton-to-Wharton crowd.  Anyway, their Maserati won’t be seen in the parking lot or with a 12-pack in the passenger seat.  More accurately, it’s “go woke and half the country will be suspicious of what you’re selling”.

Meanwhile, from the right comes the youngish business savant, anxious to be president, who is completely out of his league regarding foreign relations and national security, adding greater urgency to the possible uses of the phrase “idiot savant”.  Along with much of the c-suite, their self-confidence is so grand that they will court disaster for all of us.

Making the New Soviet Man, Western Style

50 Jahre nach dem Attentat: "Dutschke hatte ein Stück Gehirn verloren" - n-tv.de
Rudi Dutschke

Creating the New Soviet Man (and woman, and whatever) necessitates control of the social mechanisms that transmit culture.  The German leftist of the 1960’s, Rudi Dutschke, coined the slogan “der lange Marsch durch die Institutionen” – the long march through the institutions – and thus compacted the strategy to a neat little quip.

Let’s face it, a radical leftist is a Marxist who has adopted the rhetorical flair of a claque of history’s Marxists – Antonio Gramsci, The Frankfurt School (Institute for Social Research and Herbert Marcuse, et al) – in expanding the list of the oppressed to include the “nots”: not white; not white and male; not white, male, hetero – you get the picture.  The doctrine then begins to overwhelm the culture once the revolutionaries shed their shaggy hair, jeans, and sandals and don tweed, professorial beards, pant suits, and gain tenure.  After that, their nonsensical ideological peccadillos permeate everything from Supreme Court opinions to PBS’s “American Experience” films.

The Frankfurt School and Ideology - YouTube

The crux of the strategy involves conjuring a statistical disparity between a hypothetical gender/race overclass and the radicals’ favored “minorities” – aka the “oppressed” – and then a jump to one of the many “isms” and “phobias” (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia) as the cause.  The numbers are connected to a preconceived cause – a predetermined ism/phobia – by only tenuous threads of logic and fact, at best.  Once you hear or read the shambolic reasoning, if you haven’t been previously indoctrinated and still retain your wits, you will be left scratching your head at the flight of fancy’s chutzpah.

That titan of pure reason, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who refused to define woman in her confirmation hearing, injected an extension of the tactic (statistical disparity and leap to predetermined cause) in her dissenting opinion in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and UNC.  According to her, without the racial favoritism of “diversity” gamesmanship in college admissions, black babies will die.  Citing a study in one of those prestigious but newly radicalized science journals in the “long march through the institutions” (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), she expounded with all the confidence of an excessively opinionated sophomore, “. . . for high-risk Black newborns, having a Black physician more than doubles the likelihood that the baby will live, and not die.”  So, in her ill-reasoned reasoning, a B-average student from a poorly performing school should have precedence over a straight-A one who faced a more demanding curriculum, with race being the deciding factor.  Got that?  We’re back to racism.

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson Declines To Define 'Woman' Because She's 'Not A Biologist,' Sparking ...

The problem: Jackson’s study is bogus.  Even the study cites a miniscule five one-hundredths of a percent (99.96% v. 99.91%) difference in the survival rate of black newborns between black and white doctors.  Diving into the flotsam of this shipwreck, the number of infants is too small to support such a tiny difference and the study’s conclusions.  The study’s methodology screams “high margin of error”.

Not only that, it relied on generalized Census data which meant that in many cases the race of the attending physician couldn’t be determined, or whether the treatment was from a nurse, physician’s assistant, midwife, or a doctor.  Other relevant factors were left on the cutting room floor, such as the plethora of social factors that aren’t evenly distributed through the population under any circumstances.  To conclude that these social disparities are further proof of systemic racism merely nestles one more logic-leap into the general logic-leap.  Welcome to the mental miasma of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Our intertwined schools and media prepare the ground for this buffoonery.  Many teachers incorporate PBS documentaries into their curriculum (I did).  Today’s “American Experience” (AE), though, isn’t the AE of a decade ago.  It’s gone woke.  Two episodes – “American Oz” and “Flood in the Desert” – illustrate the corruption.  Many of the contributing “experts” clearly worship at the altar of the groupthink. If you wanted to learn a little about L. Frank Baum and his Oz creations, you would, along with a heavy dose of racism, sexism, and genocide against “indigenous peoples”, adding at least another 30 minutes to the program.  The collapse of St. Francis Dam north of Los Angeles in the 1920’s can’t proceed without cis-gender white male racism, sexism, and the overall patriarchal contemptuousness for Gaia.

The productions are littered with interesting facts . . . and a heavy dose of generational sneering.  It’s as if the production staff see themselves as a class of pure, enlightened deities passing judgment on those in the past who didn’t have the opportunity to be civilized at the feet of the great master, Marcuse.

The films are dripping with hubris, but what have these Marcuse acolytes wrought?  Inspired by the same mindset – maybe without the Molotov cocktails, riots, killings, and arson of their Antifa military wing – many of our cities, at the mercy of this governing philosophy, are in a doom-loop.  Go ahead, spend time travelling the surface streets of the doom-loop corridor from Seattle to San Diego, or Chicago (hire a protective private army), or the Bos-Wash corridor on the east coast.  If you avoid hepatitis or HIV, or cholera, from the litter of hypodermic needles and the open-air poop on the sidewalks, you may not survive the mugging.  The only thing in abundance, besides the filth, is the desire of residents to flee.  Marcuse-thought is a boon to U-Haul.

Who should be sneering, today’s half-witted who think themselves Olympian in their wisdom, or our ancestors?  Let Mark Twain cut to the quick:

“What gets us into trouble is not what we don’t know. It’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so.”

And our modern nincompoops know a whole lot that “ain’t so”. . . to our peril.

The New Man (or woman, or whatever) is a new man, woman, or whatever, mired in a hellscape.  San Francisco is the canary in the coal mine.  The bird is passed out on the floor of the cage.  Go ahead, YouTube search “San Francisco doom loop”.  Watch the video clip below, and this is what our post-modernist, neo-Marxist big wheels are proud of?  It’s shameful, absolutely shameful.

Here’s another one from a slightly different angle with the same conclusions:

The Expertness of the “Expert” Is Taking a Hit

Crenshaw grills witness over inability to cite benefits of trans surgeries
Dr. Meredithe McNamara testifies as an “expert” witness on gender-affirming care to Congress, July 12, 2023.

As if to warn us of the “expert” trap, Christopher Baur of University College London wrote in Research Square,

“Expert opinion is the lowest level of evidence because it is highly prone to bias.  Compared to all levels of evidence above, experts are more likely to selectively choose evidence that confirms their prior assumptions or beliefs, may be more prone to conflicts of interest, and may be so selectively focused on one field that they lose sight of the broader picture, which biases their perspective.  Expert opinion should be viewed cautiously and not necessarily taken at face value.” (see below)

****************

Please watch Rep. Dan Crenshaw take apart Dr. Meredithe McNamara, an “expert” of gender-affirming care – i.e., chemical and surgical interventions in adolescents.  If you want to see an example of an “expert” debasing themselves, the clip is very enlightening.

First, notice the “expert’s” self-confidence bordering on arrogance when she began a response to Crenshaw with “Sir, are you aware . . .”, when he was.  Many “experts” aren’t aware that they are partisan activists for an ideology.  Yes, ideology.  Break it down; it isn’t rocket science, or any other real science.  The care begins with a child’s self-diagnosis and from there many children could very well be placed on a treadmill to transition, i.e., puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and the removal of body parts.  If it was my child, I wouldn’t let the kid come within 10 degrees of longitude of that “doctor”.

People like McNamara aren’t “experts”.  Truth be known, they are social revolutionaries.  She couldn’t, when pushed, name a single scientific review of extant studies to buck up her opinion.  Her only refrain was a banal recourse to “Standards of Care” of the movement’s evangelists in the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).  Given the group’s stridency, it may as well be WARPATH.

Dr. Meredithe McNamara tried the same schtick in testimony before the Florida joint medical board committee on her favorite hobby horse: gender-affirming care – i.e., chemical and surgical interventions in adolescents.  You can read about it here: “Pro-Pediatric Gender Transition Doc Gets Slammed By Medical Professionals For ‘False Claims’”, Christina Buttons, Daily Wire, Nov. 19, 2022, at https://www.dailywire.com/news/pro-pediatric-gender-transition-doc-gets-slammed-by-medical-professionals-for-false-claims.

With “experts” like these, we might be better off with tribal shamans.

Modern Life Is Stranger Than Old Fiction

Portland’s cops were subjected to a characterization of life that is stranger than anything in George Orwell’s 1984 from 1949 (see below). The “Pronoun Training” was actually pure indoctrination in a set of highly contestable beliefs where self-delusion is to be treated as non-delusion. This episode is stranger than anything Winston and Julia were expected to believe by their interrogator O’Brien in Orwell’s story.

The “stranger than fiction” notion could be attributed to Lord Byron, or maybe it was Mark Twain when he wrote, “Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.” I guess that Twain meant that good fiction must be believable and therefore must stick to possibilities that are limited to the imagination of the author. Real truth, by contrast, isn’t so constrained.

Of course, you’d have to believe in “real truth” which many younger generations have been schooled to assume doesn’t exist. “Real truth”, after all, is a “construct” of the systemic rule of the powerful over the weak, which is the blind faith on our college campuses, and pure Marxism. The stifling dogma leaves the campus mind-censors free to make truth into whatever they claim. Their “truth” became instantly compelling after they succeeded in their long march through the institutions and into the c-suite, government, media, schools, the NGO world, etc., and it’s everywhere.

In such a world, as in Orwell’s 1984, 2+2=5. It is indeed strange for the life of today to conform in so many unexpected ways to the world of Orwell’s 1949 depiction of his fictious Oceania. Language is deformed to make 2+2=5 the “real truth”, or in our case XY people to be treated as XX (and vice versa). Thus, we have many mini-O’Briens running around as consultants getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to convince us that 2+2=5.

2 plus 2 equals 5 Shirt From the movie 1984

By the use of a rhetorical distinction between “gender” and “sex”, the now inconsequential sex-at-birth is magically replaced by the now more compelling sex-of-the-mind, all accomplished with a little word play. And cops, and everyone else, are expected to act as if the artificial reality is actual reality. Whew, the mind reels at the multiple realities like the permutations of the multiverse coming off DC/Marvel drawing boards.

The understandable reaction when confronted with gibberish is to rebel. Believe me, in the span of the 30-year career in education, I’ve been exposed to a lot of “training” in what was absolute drivel. I have an appreciation for the cops’ critical reaction to this latest blather.

“Patronizing,” “childish,” “offensive,” “garbage,” “unnecessary”, “This training is vile”, and the like were indicative of the backlash from attending cops in anonymous feedback (see below). Rather than exercise a little prudent self-criticism and reexamination, the consultants heaped abuse on the recipients by referring to the comments as examples of “racism, ableism, or white supremacy”, and therefore more “trainings” will be necessary to convert the subjects to the approved way of thinking, and a bigger tab beyond the current $440,000 consultant’s fee on the back of Portland’s taxpayers. The paid consultant Dennis Rosenbaum, the O’Brien in this real life story, stands to get richer as he works to convince others that the unbelievable is believable.

This isn’t “training”; it’s indoctrination of the kind routinely found in totalitarian regimes. One can only hope that the indoctrination remains “nice”, but “nice” frequently morphs into “compulsory” with sanctions for not conforming to the zeitgeist. For not having the approved thoughts, which will always slip out in unanticipated ways, your life may be ruined. We’ve gone way beyond accepting 2+2=5. Indeed, modern life is stranger than old fiction.

California’s War on California Parents

Over 100 children and parents with Informed Parents of California (IPOC) protest in Costa Mesa on Friday, May 17, 2019 against the state’s approval of a comprehensive sex education curriculum that includes discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity. (Photo by Michael Fernandez)

Terry McAuliffe, 2021 Democratic candidate for Virginia governor, in a debate said, “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach.”  It probably cost McAuliffe the election.  Today, what was once a huge faux pas is now a plank in the California Democratic Party platform.  California is barging ahead full speed to turn McAuliffe’s blunder into policy reality.  California parents, if you didn’t have any more reasons, follow the lead of London’s parents during the 1940 Blitz who removed their children to the countryside and get your kids out of the state.  That may be the only recourse left to you to protect them.

Don’t think for a moment that a private school will be any refuge.  Many of them are infected by the same ideological smog that dominates the rest of the state’s Education Borg.  Any holdouts will probably be squashed.  Sorry, there’s not likely to be any escape from the psychological scars and indoctrination if you remain within the borders of the state.

What prompts this warning?  Two things sound the alarm: the all-powerful California teachers unions are four-square behind porn in school libraries and curricular reading lists, and the introduction of AB 1078.  The former illustrates the monopoly power of a special interest in support of psychological scarring of tender young minds, and the latter would handcuff the parents’ ability to stop it.

Regarding the former, the Orange Unified School District Board of Trustees in Orange County, Ca., had a parent come forward to express concerns about some of the approved selections on the district’s reading list for elementary students.  The meeting was raucous with the room filled with teachers’ union activists protesting “book burning”, a rhetorical pseudonym for attempts to clean school libraries and curricular reading lists of blatant porn.  One parent braved the insults and catcalls of the union activists to step forward to express her concerns about subjecting her children to material that used to be found only on the pages of Hustler magazine.  Then the room gradually fell silent as she began to read from one selection, “The Music of What Happens”, which was found on the approved reading list app Sora.  To their credit, the board acted with dispatch by removing it the next day.  But it took an act of great personal courage to weather the abuse just to get a wildly inappropriate book from reaching the eyes of her kids.

The Music of What Happens | Audio-Download
A parent at the school board meeting read sexually explicit passages from The Music of What Happens.

A good part of the problem is the reliance on “experts” who are enthused about pushing the sexual revolution.  You can find them throughout the Education Borg, public and private, like Sora.  Sora “experts” approved the selections, school districts buy the app, and an “expert”-inspired revolution is advanced with the kids as guinea pigs.

If you as a parent don’t like it, AB 1078, if passed, will stop you from acting on your need to protect your children.  Introduced by Assemblyman Corey Jackson (D-Riverside), the bill would prevent local school boards from removing “any instructional materials or books from classrooms and school libraries or ‘ceasing to teach any curriculum’” without approval of the state board of education, which is under the thumb of the California teachers unions.

Corey A. Jackson | Voter's Edge California Voter Guide
Assemblyman Corey Jackson (D-Riverside)

With AB 1078, locally elected school boards would become toothless and parent presentations before them would be meaningless.  In a one-party state of near totalitarian control of all facets of life, the constitutional guarantees of a republican form of government and the right to petition your government will be trampled to maintain power for a special interest in the vanguard of the sexual revolution.  If you’re not onboard the revolution, you’ll be run over.

It’s a war on parents, a war on California parents by California’s state government.  Sorry for stating the obvious but you’re only option if you have kids may be to leave the state.  The stranglehold of the one-party state government and its featherbedding abettor – a public sector union – might be too strong to break in time to save your kids.

My Back Pages (Dylan): Dylan’s Lesson for Our Young Rampaging Authoritarians

See the source image

The backstory on Dylan’s “My Back Pages” is a teaching moment for the censorious zealots who happen to dominate the commanding heights of our culture and many of our political institutions.  So are the lyrics, if rightly understood.

Here’s what I’ve been able to glean in my research into the song.  In the mid-60’s, Dylan was given the Tom Paine Award for social activism by the Emergency Civil Liberties Committee.  Before this, he was getting irritated at being pigeonholed as a radical activist.  He got drunk, made a speech at the award ceremony, and much of that speech made its way into the lyrics.  As one source put it regarding the song, “. . . Dylan intensely criticizes his younger self for his moral arrogance and intellectual naivety.  More than anything, he’s mocking his own hypocrisy.  His outlook on these subjects, on himself and on the progressive movement he lambasted from the awards ceremony pulpit . . . .”  Further, according to this source, “The way Dylan saw it, he was becoming the authoritarian by continuing on his old path.”  Sound familiar?

The song’s chorus, “I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now”, was a personal admonition for turning into a vain know-it-all.  In the following lines, he upbraids himself for his hypocrisy in becoming as narrow-minded and pushy as the other side:

“In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach”

See the source image

Equality at all costs was every bit the holy grail among the radical Left in Dylan’s time as it is today among the so-called social justice warriors spitting and fulminating in lecture halls against anyone who disagrees.  Dylan saw it in the mid-60’s and portrayed it in the following lines:

“A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty is just equality in school
‘Equality,’ I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow”

What we are experiencing today is a rehash of an earlier time; only some people saw their descent into inhumanity and corrected.  Others didn’t and won’t.  The full lyrics are below.

***********

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rolling high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
“We’ll meet on edges soon,” said I
Proud ‘neath heated brow

Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow

Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Girl’s faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Unthought of, though, somehow

Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty is just equality in school
“Equality,” I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow

Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow

Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow

Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Amazon’s The Rings of Power: The Middle-earth Matriarchy

See the source image
Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez at the gala for The Rings of Power

In Tom Wolfe’s novel, “A Man in Full”, the main protagonist is the successful Atlanta entrepreneur Charlie Croker who seems to have everything but tranquility and satisfaction.  His corporation is mired in crushing debt but he has all the trappings of material success, and a new, younger trophy wife.  He divorced his first wife, Martha, after decades of marriage.  She begins to resume her life without him by getting back in shape.  She joins a gym and quickly realizes that women have changed, particularly in body type.  Gone is the hour-glass figure and everywhere she notices the absence of hips among the female fitness fanatics.  A female ideal has changed.  She dubs these women “boys with breasts”.

See the source image

Harvey C. Mansfield, Harvard professor of political philosophy, wrote the book “Manliness” in 2006.  In it, he distinguished between masculinity and manliness.  Masculinity can, but not always, stray into beastly behavior (“toxic masculinity”).  By contrast, manliness in the ancient Greek is synonymous with “courage” and therefore tied to virtue.  A manly person – for women can also exhibit manliness – would protect the weak.  Bluster, bullying, and abuse is not the stuff of manliness.

See the source image
Harvey C. Mansfield

Manliness must be differentiated from the modern slang of “BDE”, or “big d*** energy”.  At a recent campaign rally, Keri Lake (Arizona gubernatorial candidate) introduced Ron DeSantis using the earthy initials.  People enamored of Trump use it.  Manliness should not be confused with brutish bellicosity.

Why mention “boys with breasts” and manliness in connection with Amazon’s Rings of Power?  Simple, if the masterminds of the series, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, wanted to create a Middle-earth matriarchy, they could find no better device than to turn Galadriel into an Aragorn with breasts and refocus Tolkien’s tale on one of the three queens of Númenor, a total of three among the twenty-five rulers of the land in the legendarium.  The women’s characters were crafted to portray Mansfield’s manliness but lack the charisma to inspire a drug addict into an opium den.  And why the decision to exercise the creative arts to distort Tolkien’s story in this manner?  I suspect that something more fundamental is afoot, like the politico-cultural prejudices of a narrow social claque that gave us Jane’s Revenge (pro-abortion terrorism) and cancel culture.  They are the same crowd that ate up as gospel the wild smears against Brett Kavanaugh.  The bias is everywhere in our institutions and now unsurprisingly could be corrupting this rendition of Tolkien’s Middle-earth in the second age.

See the source image
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay

Or, conversely, it could be just a terrible misreading of the public’s desires from the top of the cultural pyramid above the clouds.  McKay and Payne may be doing it without awareness, mistakenly thinking that’s what the public wants.

Either way, we got an incoherent mess in this the first season.  The creation of Mordor was so off-the-wall that it could have been the product of an all-night LSD-laced bull session.  Tolkien’s Mordor was created by the evil super-spirit Melkor to be a land of volcanic activity.  Payne/McKay make it a product of the mechanical operation of turning a sword hilt like a key and voilà we have volcanic eruptions, bursting aquifers, and pyroclastic flows.  By the way, this pyroclastic flow doesn’t behave like a real pyroclastic flow.  Amazingly, magically, the hurricane of super-heated deadly gasses and fine ash doesn’t kill everyone in its path.  Galadriel, the queen of Numenor, and many others walk away as if they were only plastered with the dust from a shaken vacuum cleaner filter.  A pyroclastic flow buried Pompeii in AD 70. Talk to anyone who fled the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption.  Fantasy is riveting if it has some relationship to the real.  This falls into the category of laughingstock.

The speeches of the matriarchy are not, shall we say, awe-inspiring.  It’s not because they were made by women.  They are just simply stale.  Compare any of them to Margaret Thatcher’s refusal to bow to the pressure to compromise at the October 1980 conference of the British Conservative Party: “The Lady’s not for turning” (see below). Or, closer to home, Peter Jackson/Fran Walsh managed the stirring words for Aragorn at the Black Gate of Mordor in “The Return of the King” (see below), or Theoden’s rallying cry before the Rohirrim’s charge into the orc ranks in the Battle of Pelennor Fields (see below). They would steel the spine of anyone facing long odds. In comparison, the words of the Payne/McKay matriarchy are an insipid string of gibberish.

Then we have the disjunction of physical prowess and the natural female musculature and skeletal fragility of, say, the Aragorn with breasts, Galadriel.  There’s a reason why actors as diverse as Christian Bale to Chris Pratt to Michael B. Jordan bulk up.  It’s intuitive to match in some sense the physical action of a role with the appropriate appearance.  While it’s a stretch at times, it’s an easier visual sell.  But take Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel and her domineering physical antics alongside her frail muscle mass.  These are muscles that would have difficulty crushing a grape, let alone wielding a heavy sword to take down the mighty men of Numenor.  They’d be better casting a female MMA fighter for the role.  At least the gap between the action and her appearance would be lessened.  But better yet, reshape Galadriel’s character to fit Tolkien’s strengths for her.

See the source image
Morfydd Clark as Galadriel in The Rings of Power

Ludicrously beefing up the female roles was evident throughout, to the point of relegating the men to subsidiary positions in the story.  The Payne/McKay men are weak, petulant, or stubbornly wrongheaded.  All of a sudden, Tolkien’s mighty men of Numenor become . . . ? ? ? . . . .  One is left to wonder how they became so pivotal and deserving of great respect in the later trilogy.  Now, in the hands of Payne/McKay, the two sagas don’t relate in a basic sense.  What we have with the Rings of Power is something that appears to be an artifact of the present moment of millennials who were raised on identity politics and cultural reparations, warping everything to fit the manias of the present.  Some would say that this is a “woke” LOR and in many ways they would be right.

Even for the Harfoots (proto hobbits), while they have a male leader, it’s two teenage girls in the tribe who carry the action and wisdom of the group.  They dictate the clan’s thread in the story.  The males are limited to being sperm donors, objects of pity, and comic relief.

Women, women, girls, girls everywhere may be alright in another context, but it isn’t Tolkien.  Galadriel was strong in character, and according to Tolkien sparred with the boys, and had special gifts.  She is deserving of a prominent role in any production under the byline of Tolkien.  But Aragorn, or even Legolas, she is not.  Tolkien’s conception for her would parallel the English history of powerful monarchs like Elizabeth I.  Elizabeth was wily and shrewd, but not known for her swordplay with the Earl of Essex.  An adult Galadriel would use her feminine guile, wisdom, and special powers of foresight to command a situation.  Watching this production left me with the idea that this is Tolkien as the women of The View would have him.

We are not viewing Tolkien’s legendarium.  In the hands of Payne/McKay, it became another exercise in the modern fixation to turn women into boys with breasts.  No wonder transgenderism has gone viral and men seem to be settling into the role that Hollywood has assigned for them – as they are seemingly dropping out of the workforce, marriage, and college in substantial numbers.  Will I be watching any more of it?  Maybe.  I’d be interested in seeing how much further this thing descends into our modern cultural rabbit hole.

We Are Stuck with the Democracy that We Have. The Result of Kansas Amendment 2 is Proof.

See the source image
Yard signs in Kansas regarding the upcoming vote on Amendment 2, August 2, 2022.

I’m reminded of the truism in military strategy of knowing your enemy.  In the arena of great policy debates, it takes the form of knowing and being able to summarize your opponent’s arguments.  Don’t expect such awareness among the general public.  They have neither the time nor inclination to do the homework.  More commonly, they have vague analogies and precepts in their heads to help them make sense of the world.  The origins of these ideas are unknown, just blindly accepted as fact, and for which they have adapted their lives around.  Thus, not knowing that these fuzzy ideas have a birthdate, it’s very hard to get the electorate to reverse a notion maybe born in their childhood but one that they have grown accustomed to.

We are simply stuck with the democracy that we have.

Yesterday, Kansas voters soundly rejected Amendment 2, an attempt to remove an earlier exercise of raw judicial power when the state’s high court wrote into the Kansas constitution something that isn’t there, namely the right to abortion.  “Raw judicial power”, yes!

That gets to the crux of the matter.  The general public is mostly unaware that the Kansas high court was egregiously out of their lane, actually to the point of deserving impeachment and removal from office.  They legislated from the bench, a habit taught to them by the Warren Court and its federal progeny.

Formerly, new rights, powers, and privileges were in the wheelhouse of our elected representatives, our legislators.  If you can’t get an idea past our elected representatives, well, that’s called a democratic republic.  Don’t run to black-robed jurists trained in the application of laws to make the laws for you on the fly.  That’s called autocracy.  Distinctions in the basic functions of government aren’t taught and, therefore, most people only have the experience of their limited experience to guide them.  Our instructional and informational organs have fallen flat on their face.

As a result, relatively new ideas – new in the sense of a lifespan of only a generation or two – have an extended grip for an understandably oblivious public. They do their duty, go to the polls, and express a discomfort in reversing something whose origin and basis is mostly unknown to them.

No, don’t mistake this for popular “wisdom”.  It’s always “wisdom” if your side wins.  It’s “racism” or some other scapegoat if your side loses.  Welcome to the airheads of The Squad and fans of Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Who is to blame?  Not the general public, for how can we expect them to exhibit a mental acuity that large groups have never shown before?  If you have a desire to point fingers, aim them in the direction of the media and schools, or maybe the proponents for not doing the necessary groundwork.

The media and schools have been particularly derelict.  Don’t expect your teacher or mediagenic news personality to patiently explain “raw judicial power”.  That would require knowing the existence of the first three articles of the US Constitution.  They establish three branches with their own lanes of competence: to legislate, to carry out the law, and to apply the law.  Today, the appliers now legislate, ergo “raw judicial power”.  How?  The propagandists of the imperial courts claim the law says something that it doesn’t.  Well, it doesn’t say it in clear words, they say, but the words that do exist can be stretched to cover what it doesn’t say.  Got it?

For those 17-year-olds taking US History, it’s called “The Living Constitution”, and in the high school where I did the bulk of my teaching, the textbook has an entire chapter devoted to it.  The “grooming” starts early.

No wonder people get attached to The Living Constitution.  Yet, opinion polls consistently show disapproval of its consequences.  How else can one get to racism as anti-racism from equal protection in the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments?  How else can one get to defund the police, no-cash bail, non-prosecution of crimes, blanket early releases from prison, and filthy, homeless, dangerous, and drug-addled streets and parks?  How else can one codify in court opinions the newly minted wall of separation between gender and chromosomes?  And as a result, get masturbation, new ideas for playtime, and drag queens in elementary school and public libraries?  How else can sports designed for one set of chromosomes be destroyed by the forced acceptance of those with a different set?  How else can we get to Obama and Biden Justice Department letters threatening Title IX actions against schools who insist on keeping distinct bathrooms for each set of chromosomes?  Want your ten-year-old daughter to share a bathroom with a twelve-year-old XY “girl”?  The Living Constitution folks do.  The malformation of the Constitution knows no bounds.

It doesn’t stop there. Try to announce the obvious and you’ll face condemnation, maybe prosecution, disciplinary action, termination of employment, ostracism, and a life under the chronic threat of Twitter-hell.  There are dire consequences for speaking truth to . . . .

If we are ever to get back to law being law, and not just an utterance of the zeitgeist, people who are cognizant of the nonsense must stand up and work to correct the miseducation coming from our educrats and telegenic poseurs.  Strap on your waiters for this is going to be a long hard slog.
