What Has Happened to Bakersfield College?

City of Shafter offers grads scholarships to attend Bakersfield College | KBAK

How did we get to this place?  In one of the last remaining conservative bastions in a state gone neo-Marxist, the area’s community college district – Kern County CCD – is at the vanguard of the same poisonous revolution engulfing Sacramento and the Left-happy denizens on the populous coastal plain.  I left the state, and a near 30-year academic career in the county, because there’s no escaping the toxic governing philosophy that holds sway over the entire state.  County boundaries are no protection.  The lines don’t shelter your schools from being engines of state-sanctioned revolutionary indoctrination.

I got out.  You too may be left with no other option.

The happenings in the District and its main Bakersfield College campus are a scandal.  A few names and words typify the sickening situation.  Sonya Christian (no “Dr.” designation because it is reserved for those who passed their medical boards; PhDs in Education don’t qualify), English instructor Paula Parks (no “Dr.” designation; ditto), John Corkins (radicalized president of the Kern Community College Board of Trustees), radical jargon like DEI, and faculty counterrevolutionaries such as Daymon Johnson, Matthew Garrett, and Erin Miller of The Renegade Institute for Liberty at Bakersfield College (see Facebook page below)

Karl Marx wrote and spoke of a “false consciousness” among the people that prevents the revolutionary uprising.  “False consciousness” is reserved for those who simply disagree, the counterrevolutionaries.  It must be overcome and control of the schools is essential to that end.  In a recent meeting of the Board of Trustees, its president, John Corkins, reminiscent of Lenin before his Council of People’s Commissars, called for the extermination of faculty who dare to oppose the revolution’s DEI ideology.  Corkins said in reference to the faculty critics of the revolution’s doctrines – in essence, those guilty of “false consciousness” – of the need to “cull the herd”.  He said, “We put a rope on some of ’em and take ’em to the slaughterhouse”.

To the Slaughterhouse with You - BRUTAL MINDS
John Corkins

In 1918, a Bolshevik organ, Krasnaya Gazeta, in the midst of their revolution put it in similar terms: “Without mercy, without sparing, we will kill our enemies in scores of hundreds. Let them be thousands; let them drown themselves in their own blood . . . . let there be floods of the blood of the bourgeois – more blood, as much as possible.”  Culling the herd, indeed.

More shocking were the reputed erudites seated to his right at the trustee table who were smiling, giggling, and nodding in approval.  See for yourself in the video clip from the meeting.  It was a monstrous display of revolutionary groupthink.

Corkins was caught in the fever of a revolutionary moment, like the editors of Krasnaya Gazeta, and subsequently apologized.  Yet, it’s a window into the mind of a revolutionary.  In that mind lies a modern manifestation of an old revolutionary dialectic in the form of DEI – “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion”, or more accurately, “Discrimination, Exclusion, Indoctrination” in the words of Wisconsin’s Robin Voss (R.), Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly.

“Diversity” is code for a return to race-based hiring, promotions, and admissions.  “Equity” is code for a spoils system for selected “protected classes” (synonymous with the Marxist “oppressed”).  “Inclusion” is code for excising western civilization from instruction and replacing it with a litany of oppression by oppressors noted for their light pigmentation, male genitalia, and membership in wealthier societies.  “Privilege” and “systemic” is more jargon to that end.

How any of this can pass the muster of the Supreme Court’s Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and UNC decisions (2023) is difficult to imagine.  Chief Justice John Roberts put it succinctly in an earlier case (2007) when he wrote in the majority opinion, “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”  DEI is illegal if the rule of law has any meaning today.

Some didn’t get the Roberts memo, or more accurately ignored it in a brazen flaunting of the rule of law.  The state’s Leninist Attorney General, Rob Bonta, rushed to the defense of Sonya Christian, chancellor of the state’s community college system and past president of both the Kern Community College District and Bakersfield College, and the target of lawsuits filed by faculty victims of the purge and loyalty oaths to the revolution.  Bonta tried to recast the DEI mandates as advice, suggestions, or general guidelines, or “competencies” in Christian’s words.  DEI “competencies” (or whatever) “advising” descriptions of the ways that the faculty will implement the revolution’s doctrines into classroom management, instruction, and grading is ipso facto forced endorsement of the revolution.  Orwell’s Ministry of Truth would be proud.

Others have also noticed the discrepancy between the law and California’s zeal for neo-Marxist revolution in the upper reaches of its community colleges.  In a matter related to the lawsuit filed by the Institute for Free Speech on behalf of BC history professor Daymon Johnson against the district’s forced fealty to “anti-racist” ideology, a U.S. magistrate judge ruled that the district was wrong for stepping into a spat between faculty members Johnson and English prof Andrew Bond.  At issue was an incendiary Facebook post by Bond:

“Maybe Trump’s comment about sh**hole countries was a statement of projection because honestly, the US is a f***ing piece of sh** nation.  Go ahead and quote me, conservatives.”

Daymon Johnson, a light-skinned man with dark hair wearing sunglasses and a long-sleeved green button-down shirt, sits on a bench looking out into the distance with trees behind him.

Johnson responded by suggesting that Bond “move to China”.  And for that, Bond filed an administrative complaint of bullying against Johnson.  Hyper-sensitive academics unable to engage in discourse have no business instructing anyone’s student body.  The magistrate’s ruling is advisory while the lawsuit is pending before the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of California.

But it was the case regarding history prof Matthew Garrett that drew the ire of Corkins in his infamous remarks that “bad actors” like Garrett needed to be “culled” to the slaughterhouse.  What was Garrett’s great and unforgiveable sin?  He presented a different point of view to the reigning DEI orthodoxy on campus.  He had the temerity of defending on free speech grounds “Smash Cultural Marxism”, etc., bumper stickers.  And he was hauled before an administrative tribunal for criticizing the controversial University of Southern California Race and Equity Center poll on campus racism; trying to host a conservative speaker in violation of the school’s COVID restrictions at a time of approved progressive events, a jazz festival, football banquet, and a Day of the Dead celebration; and chiding “safe spaces” for black students as “segregation”.  If Andrew Bond’s “the US is a f***ing piece of sh** nation” earns nary a glance of concern, what to make of the administrative hammer bearing down on Garrett for presenting a coherent alternative point of view?

Sonya Christian’s influence on campus during her tenure has been anything but salutary.  She’s a lightning rod; her allegiance to neo-Marxist dogmas is provocative because the dogmas are provocative.  They goad reaction because revolutions of this nature are totalitarian.  They repudiate the central tenets of liberty which is a cornerstone of our society.  The revolutionary ends now justify the revolutionary means.

Take a look, Kern County residents, at what your Board of Trustees is doing in your name.  Please watch the clip.  In the meantime, resist or leave the state. Your choices are simple at this juncture. Good luck.

Making the New Soviet Man, Western Style

50 Jahre nach dem Attentat: "Dutschke hatte ein Stück Gehirn verloren" - n-tv.de
Rudi Dutschke

Creating the New Soviet Man (and woman, and whatever) necessitates control of the social mechanisms that transmit culture.  The German leftist of the 1960’s, Rudi Dutschke, coined the slogan “der lange Marsch durch die Institutionen” – the long march through the institutions – and thus compacted the strategy to a neat little quip.

Let’s face it, a radical leftist is a Marxist who has adopted the rhetorical flair of a claque of history’s Marxists – Antonio Gramsci, The Frankfurt School (Institute for Social Research and Herbert Marcuse, et al) – in expanding the list of the oppressed to include the “nots”: not white; not white and male; not white, male, hetero – you get the picture.  The doctrine then begins to overwhelm the culture once the revolutionaries shed their shaggy hair, jeans, and sandals and don tweed, professorial beards, pant suits, and gain tenure.  After that, their nonsensical ideological peccadillos permeate everything from Supreme Court opinions to PBS’s “American Experience” films.

The Frankfurt School and Ideology - YouTube

The crux of the strategy involves conjuring a statistical disparity between a hypothetical gender/race overclass and the radicals’ favored “minorities” – aka the “oppressed” – and then a jump to one of the many “isms” and “phobias” (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia) as the cause.  The numbers are connected to a preconceived cause – a predetermined ism/phobia – by only tenuous threads of logic and fact, at best.  Once you hear or read the shambolic reasoning, if you haven’t been previously indoctrinated and still retain your wits, you will be left scratching your head at the flight of fancy’s chutzpah.

That titan of pure reason, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who refused to define woman in her confirmation hearing, injected an extension of the tactic (statistical disparity and leap to predetermined cause) in her dissenting opinion in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and UNC.  According to her, without the racial favoritism of “diversity” gamesmanship in college admissions, black babies will die.  Citing a study in one of those prestigious but newly radicalized science journals in the “long march through the institutions” (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), she expounded with all the confidence of an excessively opinionated sophomore, “. . . for high-risk Black newborns, having a Black physician more than doubles the likelihood that the baby will live, and not die.”  So, in her ill-reasoned reasoning, a B-average student from a poorly performing school should have precedence over a straight-A one who faced a more demanding curriculum, with race being the deciding factor.  Got that?  We’re back to racism.

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson Declines To Define 'Woman' Because She's 'Not A Biologist,' Sparking ...

The problem: Jackson’s study is bogus.  Even the study cites a miniscule five one-hundredths of a percent (99.96% v. 99.91%) difference in the survival rate of black newborns between black and white doctors.  Diving into the flotsam of this shipwreck, the number of infants is too small to support such a tiny difference and the study’s conclusions.  The study’s methodology screams “high margin of error”.

Not only that, it relied on generalized Census data which meant that in many cases the race of the attending physician couldn’t be determined, or whether the treatment was from a nurse, physician’s assistant, midwife, or a doctor.  Other relevant factors were left on the cutting room floor, such as the plethora of social factors that aren’t evenly distributed through the population under any circumstances.  To conclude that these social disparities are further proof of systemic racism merely nestles one more logic-leap into the general logic-leap.  Welcome to the mental miasma of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Our intertwined schools and media prepare the ground for this buffoonery.  Many teachers incorporate PBS documentaries into their curriculum (I did).  Today’s “American Experience” (AE), though, isn’t the AE of a decade ago.  It’s gone woke.  Two episodes – “American Oz” and “Flood in the Desert” – illustrate the corruption.  Many of the contributing “experts” clearly worship at the altar of the groupthink. If you wanted to learn a little about L. Frank Baum and his Oz creations, you would, along with a heavy dose of racism, sexism, and genocide against “indigenous peoples”, adding at least another 30 minutes to the program.  The collapse of St. Francis Dam north of Los Angeles in the 1920’s can’t proceed without cis-gender white male racism, sexism, and the overall patriarchal contemptuousness for Gaia.

The productions are littered with interesting facts . . . and a heavy dose of generational sneering.  It’s as if the production staff see themselves as a class of pure, enlightened deities passing judgment on those in the past who didn’t have the opportunity to be civilized at the feet of the great master, Marcuse.

The films are dripping with hubris, but what have these Marcuse acolytes wrought?  Inspired by the same mindset – maybe without the Molotov cocktails, riots, killings, and arson of their Antifa military wing – many of our cities, at the mercy of this governing philosophy, are in a doom-loop.  Go ahead, spend time travelling the surface streets of the doom-loop corridor from Seattle to San Diego, or Chicago (hire a protective private army), or the Bos-Wash corridor on the east coast.  If you avoid hepatitis or HIV, or cholera, from the litter of hypodermic needles and the open-air poop on the sidewalks, you may not survive the mugging.  The only thing in abundance, besides the filth, is the desire of residents to flee.  Marcuse-thought is a boon to U-Haul.

Who should be sneering, today’s half-witted who think themselves Olympian in their wisdom, or our ancestors?  Let Mark Twain cut to the quick:

“What gets us into trouble is not what we don’t know. It’s what we know for sure that just ain’t so.”

And our modern nincompoops know a whole lot that “ain’t so”. . . to our peril.

The New Man (or woman, or whatever) is a new man, woman, or whatever, mired in a hellscape.  San Francisco is the canary in the coal mine.  The bird is passed out on the floor of the cage.  Go ahead, YouTube search “San Francisco doom loop”.  Watch the video clip below, and this is what our post-modernist, neo-Marxist big wheels are proud of?  It’s shameful, absolutely shameful.

Here’s another one from a slightly different angle with the same conclusions:

Modern Life Is Stranger Than Old Fiction

Portland’s cops were subjected to a characterization of life that is stranger than anything in George Orwell’s 1984 from 1949 (see below). The “Pronoun Training” was actually pure indoctrination in a set of highly contestable beliefs where self-delusion is to be treated as non-delusion. This episode is stranger than anything Winston and Julia were expected to believe by their interrogator O’Brien in Orwell’s story.

The “stranger than fiction” notion could be attributed to Lord Byron, or maybe it was Mark Twain when he wrote, “Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because Fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities; Truth isn’t.” I guess that Twain meant that good fiction must be believable and therefore must stick to possibilities that are limited to the imagination of the author. Real truth, by contrast, isn’t so constrained.

Of course, you’d have to believe in “real truth” which many younger generations have been schooled to assume doesn’t exist. “Real truth”, after all, is a “construct” of the systemic rule of the powerful over the weak, which is the blind faith on our college campuses, and pure Marxism. The stifling dogma leaves the campus mind-censors free to make truth into whatever they claim. Their “truth” became instantly compelling after they succeeded in their long march through the institutions and into the c-suite, government, media, schools, the NGO world, etc., and it’s everywhere.

In such a world, as in Orwell’s 1984, 2+2=5. It is indeed strange for the life of today to conform in so many unexpected ways to the world of Orwell’s 1949 depiction of his fictious Oceania. Language is deformed to make 2+2=5 the “real truth”, or in our case XY people to be treated as XX (and vice versa). Thus, we have many mini-O’Briens running around as consultants getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to convince us that 2+2=5.

2 plus 2 equals 5 Shirt From the movie 1984

By the use of a rhetorical distinction between “gender” and “sex”, the now inconsequential sex-at-birth is magically replaced by the now more compelling sex-of-the-mind, all accomplished with a little word play. And cops, and everyone else, are expected to act as if the artificial reality is actual reality. Whew, the mind reels at the multiple realities like the permutations of the multiverse coming off DC/Marvel drawing boards.

The understandable reaction when confronted with gibberish is to rebel. Believe me, in the span of the 30-year career in education, I’ve been exposed to a lot of “training” in what was absolute drivel. I have an appreciation for the cops’ critical reaction to this latest blather.

“Patronizing,” “childish,” “offensive,” “garbage,” “unnecessary”, “This training is vile”, and the like were indicative of the backlash from attending cops in anonymous feedback (see below). Rather than exercise a little prudent self-criticism and reexamination, the consultants heaped abuse on the recipients by referring to the comments as examples of “racism, ableism, or white supremacy”, and therefore more “trainings” will be necessary to convert the subjects to the approved way of thinking, and a bigger tab beyond the current $440,000 consultant’s fee on the back of Portland’s taxpayers. The paid consultant Dennis Rosenbaum, the O’Brien in this real life story, stands to get richer as he works to convince others that the unbelievable is believable.

This isn’t “training”; it’s indoctrination of the kind routinely found in totalitarian regimes. One can only hope that the indoctrination remains “nice”, but “nice” frequently morphs into “compulsory” with sanctions for not conforming to the zeitgeist. For not having the approved thoughts, which will always slip out in unanticipated ways, your life may be ruined. We’ve gone way beyond accepting 2+2=5. Indeed, modern life is stranger than old fiction.

Our National Decomposition Continues Apace

Our national decomposition shows little sign of abating.  Elections in Wisconsin and Chicago indicate that there remains an appetite for decay.

Another word for decline or decomposition of a culture, civilization, or nation is degringolade.  Whichever word is used, however, we are experiencing it.  Nature isn’t doing it to us.  We are doing it to ourselves.  The precipitating factor is what is bouncing between our ears.  A sizeable chunk of the electorate, without even knowing it in many cases, is sold on toxic neo-Marxism in the guise of modern progressivism.  Today, progressivism and this updated Marxism are synonymous.  I’m beginning to sound like a broken record since I’ve certainly mentioned it often enough but can’t get away from it.  It’s constantly resurfacing in many places around the country.

This isn’t the progressivism of Woodrow Wilson.  As a refresher, this current edition is a relatively modern refashioning of Karl Marx’s paradigm: the systemic oppression of the oppressed who are defined by an ever-fungible list of outgroups covering everything from XY girls to the poor to anyone with high melanin counts.  To the rescue in this blinkered ideological schematic is a complete, top to bottom, inside and out, overhaul of all societal arrangements from the family to property, a thoroughgoing Marxist revolution.  Sound familiar?  Read BLM’s mission statement before it was scrubbed clean of too much revelatory information (see below).  We’ve proven to be quite creative in defining the “oppressed”, or victim groups.  For greenies, you might add the mother goddess Gaia (earth) to the list.  Anyway, this latest edition fairs no better than the kind that lurked behind the Iron Curtain or Mao’s China or is lurking in North Korea and Cuba.  It is a sacking of our heritage and thrusting the country into despair.

The canary passing out in the coal mine in this moment of our evisceration is urban America.  Our cities are crumbling, and so are the states dominated by them. The story has been acted out before.  We are historically rhyming with 4th and 5th-century AD Rome.  The Roman Empire didn’t go out in a boom but a whimper.  The cities became unlivable, mired in high taxes, crumbling infrastructure, a deterioration of services, lack of security, and overburdening controls.  Who’d want to live there?  Apparently, many didn’t by the 5th century.  The population of the city nearly emptied from over a million in the 1st century AD to 30,000 by the 5th.  Other similarly weakened urban places suffered.  People flocked to fortified estates, monasteries, and towns with natural defenses.  It’s the beginning of feudalism.

visigoths+%281%29.jpg 1,405×1,005 pixels | Vikings | Pinterest | Roman empire and Roman legion

Feudalism is returning.  Today, in the good ‘ol USA, people are rushing to states and places where 3-strikes laws mean something, where taxes and bureaucracies aren’t bleeding producers white, where parking your car on the street in front of your house isn’t an invitation to vandalism.  In other words, where neo-Marxism/progressivism is held in disrepute.

Where boys’ and girls’ bathrooms are separated by a wall.  Where nature’s chromosomal distinction hasn’t been buried by the linguistic manipulations of pronouns and “birthing person” for “woman”.  It’s just the opposite in our urban neo-Marxist silos.  Entirely mired in the mindset, many of our cities and urbanized states are busy advancing the revolution by eliminating other distinctions such as the one between criminal and law-abiding.  Judges and local potentates treat criminals as victims and their real victims as . . . well . . . .

As if we need any more evidence, Whole Foods announced yesterday (4/10/2023) that it was “temporarily closing” its 65,000 square foot San Francisco outlet at Eighth and Market, the Trinity section, that it just opened last year.  According to a company spokesman, “If we feel we can ensure the safety of our team members in the store, we will evaluate a reopening of our Trinity location.”  The area has been plagued by brutal beatings, stabbings, killings, and accidents in recent weeks.  Too few cops and law-unenforcement is making San Francisco look like 5th-century Rome (see below).

These arbiters of revolutionary justice in places like San Francisco have their own vocabulary to push this cultural revolution. “Decarceration” is the go-to for releasing offenders to reoffend, just call it “low-level crime”, which is another word for “inconsequential” to Soros-backed DA’s – inconsequential to everyone but the person left battered, bruised, and bleeding in the subway.  Barbarian invasions aren’t doing it to us, unless barbarian refers to the urban powerful who have drunk the neo-Marxist Kool-Aid. Your progressive DA, judges, city council, mayor, governor, and state legislature are performing the role of the Visigoths and their King Alaric in laying waste to Rome in 410 AD.

The only recourse for those not too fond of the mayhem is to vote with their feet.  Get out!  But these are democracies – surprise!  The corruption is democratic.  People are voting for mayhem. How’s that possible?  It might have something to do with a little cost/benefit analysis on the run: the rewards of group largesse from the public treasury are greater than the costs of possibly losing your little girl in a drive-by.  I know, it’s hard to believe.  But, on the other hand, it could just be stupid people being stupid, something not unheard of in the annals of democracy.

Or it could be due to the overall social decomposition extending to our schools.  People aren’t taught any better; they don’t know any better; and are easily led into believing nonsense.  Yet, policy-nonsense still behaves, as it always has, whether popularly chosen or not, like a drunk behind the wheel.  It’s a disaster careening down our thoroughfares.  And like most drunks, all-too-often they don’t get sober till they hit bottom.  Apparently, our urban electorates haven’t hit bottom.  Or it could be that the voter pool has been reduced to the drunks, the sober having fled to safer climes (red states).

A sizeable majority – by ten points – of Wisconsin voters recently failed the field sobriety test but still grabbed the car keys.  Some attribute the recent election of the Visigothic Janet Protasiewicz to the State Supreme Court to the abortion issue.  Probably true, but Wisconsinites have now let the Visigoths through the gates with a new Visigothic majority on the Court and, as a result, will get much more than carte blanche abortion.  Protasiewicz promised during the campaign to rewrite the state’s redistricting maps to the advantage of the neo-Marxists who promise more sacking into the foreseeable future.  In addition, expect more teacher-union power to dictate your child’s education, backdoor racism in diversity-equity-inclusion, and higher taxes to finance the revolution.  The whole litany of policies to promote the revolution against hypothetical systemic “oppressors” are about to be unleashed.  And so will a run on exiting U-Hauls, proving once again that the only thing efficiently produced by Marxism is refugees.

Money is the mother’s milk of politics . . . and revolution.  The donkey party neo-Marxists, in spite of their dismal record, are well-funded from a network of similarly intoxicated donors.  The precedent was established by Lenin in 1917.  The Bolsheviks were bankrolled by Imperial Germany. A revolution rides on more than fulminations.

Money and an election system reshaped to the advantage of their base put Protasiewicz in office, and gave Chicago another Alaric-style mayor, Brandon Johnson, to replace the Visigothic Lori Lightfoot.  The guy is marinated in neo-Marxism, like his predecessor.  San Francisco, Wisconsin, and Chicago are pointing the way to the future, the same future viewed by 5th-century Romans and early 20th-century Petrograd residents.

May be an image of 1 person

If not arrested, our condition will continue to deteriorate . . . until riveting calamities shock us back to our senses.  Hopefully, by then, it won’t be too late.  Hopefully, we won’t wake up to news of two aircraft carriers sunk in the western Pacific, and our response is crippled by an economy unable to meet the demands of the moment, or a population unwilling to fight after years of anti-western indoctrination in our media and schools.  A pool of recruits rattled by gender dysphoria and accusations of white privilege can’t instill much confidence.

The signs of decay aren’t limited to the popularity of chic neo-Marxism among urban sophisticates.  Another passed-out canary is plummeting birth rates and closing maternity wards.  It’s hard to have a robust generational talent pool to face the threat with a population befuddled by pronouns and fungible sex-identity, all as the population shrinks.  We’ve got a lot to worry about.  And all the while, neo-Marxism, acting like the Visigoths, is busy hollowing out the nation and its civilization.  At this late hour, the odor of national decomposition is beginning to overwhelm the olfactory glands.

Today, one could substitute “urban from rural” for “North from South”.  Please be cautioned, though, that some blowhards will manage to warp the nature of the divide.  Marjorie Taylor Greene, that grand dame of unhinged hyperbole on the right, recently tweeted and repeated on Sean Hannity, “We need a national divorce.”  She added, “We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government.”  Her national divorce is incomprehensible since her blue/red dividing lines don’t neatly conform to state boundaries.  It is more intrastate than anything, between a plethora of blue freckles against a sea of red across the entire national domain.  That reality captures the essence of the current impasse.  The root of our disjunction is cultural.  A fundamental difference of ethos separates the blue dots from the red swaths.

The split consists of mutually incompatible mindsets with one being revolutionary and the other defensive of America’s founding.  Both sides didn’t mutually move way from each other.  One leaped from the other as if it had the plague.  The key precipitating factor is the adoption of a radical cultural revolution by social, commercial and political elites in concentrated urban and academic nodes.  Ronald Reagan once said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic party, the Democratic Party left me.”  Well, America didn’t leave rural areas, but it certainly was kicked out of these nodes of concentrated power and influence.  The separation is the logical outgrowth of the radicalization of our cultural elites.

The radicalization of the blue dots – what today makes them blue (actually red in its historical meaning) – consists in the adoption of a particular Marxist’s ideas on how to advance the revolution in spite of popular resistance to it.  Antonio Gramsci in the 1930’s penciled out his grand strategy to advance the worldwide revolution.  Karl Marx’s original idea was the organic development of a worker class consciousness which would culminate in the seizure of the means of production and set the world on the path to utopia.  Others, including Lenin and Gramsci, noticed that it wasn’t happening as predicted.  Lenin’s solution was a vanguard elite to precipitate the overthrow of the existing order.  For his part, Gramsci advocated a “long march” through cultural institutions and civil society, the social elements that lie mostly between the people and government (civil society: churches, charities, social organizations, schools, businesses).

Antonio Gramsci

Lenin’s coup d’état expired with the implosion of the USSR in 1991 – speaking of internal contradictions that culminate in revolution (typical Marxist rhetoric).  Gramsci, who died before he was set to be released from Mussolini’s jail in 1937, would posthumously succeed beyond his wildest dreams.  He became the darling of the 1960’s New Left that would quickly morph into today’s progressivism.  A hive of intertwined Gramsci acolytes dominates many of our important institutions such as the schools, the Fortune 500 c-suite, media, entertainment, foundations, charities, mainline churches, the administrative state, the Democratic Party, and of course higher ed.

The danger of this new Gramscian upper class to the rest of the country, so isolated as they are, was best expressed by Charles Murray in his book, Coming Apart:

“Many of the members of the new upper class are balkanized. Furthermore, their ignorance about other Americans is more problematic than the ignorance of other Americans about them.  It is not a problem if truck drivers cannot empathize with the priorities of Yale professors.  It is a problem if Yale professors, or producers of network news programs, or CEOs of great corporations, or presidential advisers cannot empathize with the priorities of truck drivers.  It is inevitable that people have large areas of ignorance about how others live, but that makes it all the more important that the members of the new upper class be aware of the breadth and depth of their ignorance.”

So ubiquitous are Gramsci’s ideas that you at least know them intuitively.  They are everywhere. The notorious CRT is just the application of Gramsci’s Critical Theory to racial matters.  It’s the same formula when considering gender, ethnicity, or mixtures of the host of identities (intersectionality) encompassed within the “other”, the so-called oppressed.  Favoritism and oppression in the Gramscian hivemind are embedded in the culture, even if it has been superficially expunged from government.  It’s systemic in the culture, they say.  Real revolution won’t happen if the broader culture isn’t enlisted in the effort.  Today, they succeeded for the most part.

The influence of the hivemind may be what John O’Sullivan had in mind in his law of organizational behavior: all organizations that are not actually right-wing will over time become left-wing.  The prevalent hivemind is too powerful to ignore.  The evidence is all around.  TV commercials are replete with representations of the “other” far beyond any reasonable relationship to their portion of the population.  Those same ads are boosters for the ideology’s favorite products such as ev’s, as well as campaigns against the hated plastics and fossil fuels, alongside a push for the stakeholder corporate-management nonsense that threatens the health of my pension.  MLB moved the Allstar Game; the NFL diluted the national anthem with the addition of an identity anthem; the kneelings; the black power fist thrusts.  Popular entertainment and their awards extravaganzas are not without their ritual display of the putative threat of systemic racism and illusory attacks on the “other”.  DEI and CRT are everywhere in curriculums, hiring, and admissions, with a baleful effect on standards and morale.

An entire industry has appeared overnight to cater and push the agenda on adults and their children.  All of it is meant to bend the mind to accept the advantaging of one group at the expense of another, all of it based on race, gender, and ethnicity identity.  We’re back to a new Jim Crow.

May be an image of 1 person and text that says 'SRENIEW "I have dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.' -Martin Luther King WRONG! MODNN WOKE @Ramireztoons michaelpramirez.com'

The assault on the minds of children is the most outrageous.  Outright pornography is introduced to adolescents under the guise of furthering tolerance for the sexual “other” (transgendered, etc.).  The distinction between mere tolerance and ideological recruitment won’t be fully appreciated on the part of the teacher-as-propagandist or obviously an impressionable high school sophomore, thereby artificially swelling the ranks of this new “other” in a social contagion.  Behavior and language – if presented on radio or television, they would be eligible for a fine or loss of license – is now part of school and training curriculums, and the inventories of school libraries, for 8-year-olds in some places.  Child abuse laws in states like California have been warped to shield children from parental interference in a minor’s choice to engage in essentially experimental sex-change interventions.

California has gone so far as declared itself to be the newest kind of sanctuary: a haven for a minor’s decision to break free of their parents’ influence, from any place, state, or country of origin.  An underground railroad to the golden state for legally protected child sexual mutilation will soon follow.

Picture

A child’s newfound identity as a gender “other” will be reinforced by an absence of countervailing views, opposing opinions having been quashed by entrenched activists dominating society’s institutions.  The struggle in the newsroom at the NY Times is instructive.  Prior to 2021, the paper treated the issue of trans ideology as if there was only one side, the trans activists’ side.  You know, it’s the same one given to your kids in their school: sex isn’t binary; denial of gender identity is bigotry; refusals to affirm a child’s self-diagnosis are akin to murder by suicide; a medical consensus exists in support of all things trans; the recent increase in teen trans self-identity isn’t evidence of a social contagion.  Truth be told, a defensible counterpoint can be made to each one of these contentions, but it didn’t appear on the pages of the Times.  Then, dissenters found other outlets like Bari Weiss’s Substack page.

After activists in the newsroom got opinion editor James Bennet to resign for approving a Tom Cotton op-ed, his replacements began to show some spine in not kowtowing to the radicals in their midst.  Some opinion pieces questioning the newsroom orthodoxy began to appear.  The hive was riled about having to face an opposing point of view.  LGBTQ+ activist groups penned a letter to the paper condemning the openness.  A group of contributors sent one railing against the simple recognition of another side in the debate.  For them, there is no debate.

Picture

Their mind is closed and want to see everyone’s mind similarly clamped shut.  In one of the letters, they declared, “. . . stop questioning science that is SETTLED.”  Where have we heard that before?  End a debate by simply issuing the fatwah of “SETTLED” without stooping so low as to prove their position.

The censorship makes the unproven and untrue seem plausible.  At this point, the Gramscian “long march” sheds its cloak of tolerance to expose its true totalitarian nature.  The philosopher Robert P. George has an eloquent description of the difference between an authoritarian and totalitarian:

“Ordinary authoritarians are content to forbid people from speaking truths.  Totalitarians insist on forcing people to speak untruths.”

Cancel culture is forcing the gullible to speak untruths.  We are running the danger of an entire generation being coaxed into believing contestable ideas are uncontestable.  That’s dangerous.  It’s one sure way for humaneness to disappear from humanity.  People are frog-marched out of their jobs and free speech and conscience are suppressed.  Public intellectuals, academics, and people of professional accomplishment who disagree are dismissed as “deniers”, “. . . phobics”, haters, and blocked from outlets.

The reigning neo-Marxists have, maybe forever, mutilated the meaning of words such as “consensus”.  Their “consensus” – “the science is SETTLED” – is the wedge that is driving rural from urban.  The blue nodes are the nexus of this Gramscian cultural revolution.  Pardon people in the countryside for noticing this lurch into insanity.  A good portion of the country doesn’t want to go where DEI consultants want to lead it.

Previously travelled routes to the socialist hyper-state have only led to misery.  Now, will I be “cancelled” for saying it?

Probably due to past loyalty, I sat down to watch the San Francisco 49ers v. Seattle Seahawks game last Sunday (SF won 27-7); however, I must admit that my enthusiasm for professional sports has waned.  I can’t remove from my mind Big Sports’ enrollment in the radical left.  Neither can I erase the images of these two cities’ decline into urban chaos, as is true of most of the other NFL home cities.  These cities willingly chose that path. A smothering cloud of ideologically driven misrule overhangs the stadium crowd, the broadcast, and the team organizations.  With few exceptions, the NFL schedule has turned into a series of Dystopia Bowls: one team booster of the radical left agenda from a radical left dystopia playing another with an identical image.

I didn’t politicize the sport.  Previously, I had no clue about the political leanings of those composing the team organizations and the league, and didn’t care.  As for the cities, they upheld for the most part some sense of decency.  Not anymore.  The sport concerned itself, pure and simple, with athletic competition at the highest level.  Not anymore.

How did the NFL and their urban homes allow themselves to descend into such depravity?  The movie “All the President’s Men” made popular the modern cynic’s favorite principle: “Follow the money”.  That’s not true by a long shot.  If you want to accurately follow the course of human events, “Follow the ideas”.  It’s how we got to a compromised NFL and today’s unlivable cities.

It begins with one word: Socialism.  Yes, that word, a rhetorical vessel wherein the perennial hopes and dreams of human betterment can be realized, despite its track record of abysmal failure.  Its oppressed/oppressor dialectic is so appealing that it escapes any final verdict on its failure.  It’s the vampire that won’t stay dead.

In one sense, what began with Marx and Engels, passed through the 60’s New Left, and would end up in today’s BLM, Antifa, college campuses everywhere, and the Democratic Party platform.  In the good ‘ol days of the 19th century Socialist International, the oppressed was the industrial revolution’s urban working class (proletariat).  But the dreams of revolution by the proletariat fizzled and where they did succeed in a takeover, it was a litany of nightmares: 100 million deaths in the 20th century by one accounting of a group of French historians in The Black Book of Communism.

Yet, something happened on the way to the collectivist Emerald City of Oz to keep the flame burning.  Two things: new groups auditioned for the roles of oppressor (the white patriarchy) and oppressed (minorities and a plethora of hypothetical outcasts), and the real threat was said to come from an abstract “system”.  And voilà, new life was breathed into the disgraced Marx.

The home of The Frankfurt School in Frankfurt, Germany, in the 1930’s.

Pointing the way were disgruntled Marxists ensconced in what came to be called the Frankfurt School.  They followed the line of thought of Antonio Gramsci who tried to explain away the reluctance of workers to be enthusiasts of revolution by pinning the blame on “cultural hegemony” – the values, mores, institutions, and ways of life that keep them supposedly docile.  In modern lingo, synonyms would be “the man”, “the system”, or “the establishment”.  Inspired by Gramsci’s gambit, European activist academics banded together and formed the Institute for Social Research at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, which would later be dubbed The Frankfurt School.  Hitler, however, set them packing in the 1930’s.  Many of them made their way to the United States – the Frankfurt School set up shop in New York City – to eventually take up academic posts to proselytize the American young in their babble.

Theordor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, et al, and the risible Herbert Marcuse lent their thoughts and encouragement to the burgeoning 60’s counterculture and the extremist New Left to continue the erosion of the foundations of western civilization.  The physical consequences were plagues of drugs and STD’s.  The political offshoots were the SDS, Weather Underground, Black Panthers, Symbionese Liberation Army, etc.  Crime and urban riots erupted, and campuses were paralyzed in protest and violence.  It would appear that the trail of these ideas is one of tears.  Some liberals were shocked into neo-conservatism by the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Once again, disaster, and, once again, someone will appear to pick up the torch to fling it.  It’s proof that gullibility like the poor will always be with us.  In our social media world, glibness reigns supreme in the form of stitching together words into appealing quips that remain just as erroneous as they did before.  The glibness of the BLM politburo, Nikole Hannah-Jones (the lead founder behind the intellectually bankrupt The 1619 Project), Bernie, the Biden crowd, the CRT demagogues, AOC and her Squad, and the big wheels of the Democratic Party can only put lipstick on a pig and cannot with a wave of the hand turn the porcine beast into Miss Universe.  I don’t believe in shapeshifting.  Do you?

Today is different, though.  Whereas before, the nuttiness infected the fringes of society, only occasionally bursting forth to wreak havoc.  Today, it’s everywhere and especially among the those who occupy the commanding heights of the culture.  Why does big business from Major League Baseball to Coca-Cola to Delta Airlines to Disney risk alienating two-thirds of their customer base, unless they actually believe this bunk?  There must be something more at work than fear of the race hustlers’ shakedown racket.

Rudi Dutschke, a German missionary of the 60’s New Left, pointed the way by espousing a “long march through the institutions”.  He elaborated, “Revolution is a long complicated process in which people have to change.”  He meant to shove aside and replace established civil society and government.  But others realized that a root-and-branch approach wasn’t necessary, that today’s unkept radicals in blue jeans could be tomorrow’s tenured staff in tweed.  Welcome to your kid’s nest of revolution, errr, college.

Simply put, the barbarians at the gates became the barbarians inside the gates.  Lo and behold, the neo-socialism is dogma among the beautiful people residing in their super-zip code (Martha’s Vineyard, Chappaqua, NY, Atherton, Ca., Malibu, Ca., etc.), any place where hyper-wealth screens people from the consequences of their beliefs.  Of course, part of the uniform for this new aristocracy is a degree from a legacy university, preferably Ivy League.  They have all the outward signs of manners and outlook of a college pedigree, and the inward signs of proper breeding in fealty to the dogma.  The Fortune 500 is no longer the Republican Party at work.  It’s an alumni booster club for the neo-socialism of the campus.

The minions of this new privilege infiltrate beyond the boardroom and into all positions of power and influence.  Since FDR made DC into the new Rome, and swelled its politico-cultural influence beyond the District and into the surrounding states of Maryland and Virginia, the neo-socialism has at its disposal the aggrandized power of the federal government.  Any popular threat to its monopoly can be squashed under the banner of another German rhetorical import: streitbare Demokratie, or defensive democracy.  It normally shows up as censorship.  It’s the speech control in “hate” and “extremist” statutes and regulations in the European Union, UK, Austria, Germany, etc.  You hear it out of the mouths of Pelosi, Schumer, Biden in “defending our democracy”, which is code for thought control by pasting contrary views with “misinformation”.  Biden has attempted an institutionalization of the censorship by creating “misinformation” ministries in his administration, all stymied as of now.

See the source image
Pres. Biden’s speech in Philadelphia on Sept. 1, 2022, branded “MAGA Republicans” dangerous “extremists”.

Streitbare demokratie seeks to freeze in amber the gains of the long march of neo-socialism through the institutions.  The effects are physically observable in viral gender confusions among the young, uninhabitable downtowns, a plague of crime, radical indoctrination of the young, an ecotopia that forcibly reverts life back to medieval times, and a crumbling infrastructure that can’t deliver safe roads, sewers, water, or affordable and reliable electricity.  Hillsides aflame, high taxes, inflation, and gargantuan government waste characterize life in this “democracy”.  It’s like the decay of Rome in the 5th and 6th centuries after repeated barbarian conquests and misrule.  Soon, much of the place is abandoned only to fall into rubble, to be later uncovered by the new field of 19th century archeology.  Is that the fate of New York City, Baltimore, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New Orleans, et al?

America’s Ya’nan Rectification Campaign

May be an image of 5 people and text that says 'CRITICAL RACE THEORY: Racism is "systemic" and present in every aspect of life. Your "identity" is function of your skin color. America's 19th century westward expansion was the shameful product of "Whiteness.' White people give blacks opportunities only when its in their own best interests. RACIST.'

1986 became the pivotal year when American universities began the process of turning American’s young people into illiterates of their own national and cultural inheritance.  It was the year when political entrepreneurs like Jesse Jackson arrived on the Stanford University campus to chant “Hey hey, ho ho, Western Culture’s got to go.”  Their target was instruction in the western way of life, the cultural legacy of advanced science, personal liberty, intellectual enlightenment, Judeo-Christian spirituality, economic prosperity, and popular sovereignty.  Jackson and his student audience demanded to chuck it all.

May be an image of 1 person
Jesse Jackson in 1980.
Jesse Jackson at Stanford University in 1986 joining in a protest against a western civilization curricular core at the school, famous for the chant, “Hey Hey, ho ho, western culture has to go”.

The 1980’s core requirement of a multi-quarter Western Culture curriculum for all students had replaced Western Civilization after the uproar against western civilization by 1960’s left radicals.  Shortly after Jackson’s appearance on campus, anything exclusively western would be expunged as a universal core requirement.  Eventually, the Stanford faculty senate replaced Western Culture with the nebulous Cultures, Ideas, and Values.  The signal for the ostracization of western civilization has since permeated everywhere down to the instruction given to the kindergartners of today.  Don’t dare place a mic before a college senior on spring break to describe the Constitution’s three branches of government.  You’ll get jibberish.

And look at what replaced it, for something did.  Nature hates a vacuum and so does the mind.  In crept a neo-Marxist self-loathing.  On the heels of the incessant assault on western culture and history came the full-throated “Rectification” program of the 2000’s that mirrors what Mao did in China, which started in Moa’s remote base of Ya’nan, Shaanxi province, in the 1940’s, and was called the Ya’ana Rectification Campaign.  It was a ghastly campaign that slaughtered an estimated 10,000 people before Mao was done.  It was Moa’s megalomania on parade.  Of interest here isn’t the bloodthirsty escapades, even though that’s bad enough.  It’s his methods of inculcating the incipient Marxist/Maoist mush.

One of many public denunciations and humiliations during Mao’s Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. An example Mao’s earlier “rectification campaign”, only this one lasted 10 years and stretched across the whole country.

The isolation of groups by identity, the “struggle sessions”, the bizarre confessions, the identification of abstract enemies, the pounding indoctrination, and the denunciations goes beyond thought control and right into emotion control.  It’s sickening, and it’s replicated today.  Mao’s target at the time was the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), but for today’s revolutionaries, the entire society is the target.  Don’t worry, Mao got there quick enough.

Under the labels of “CRT”, “Critical Theory”, “Anti-racism Training”, “Understanding White Privilege”, etc., our modern revolutionary theorists are treating the minds of Americans up and down the social pyramid from classrooms to corporate boardrooms as clay.  Employees are subjected to Anti-racism training, essentially the works of revolutionary theorists such as Ibram X. Kendi and Robin Deangelo.  The kiddies in their classrooms go through lessons that heap shame on them for their “whiteness”, and doubly so if they happen to be male.  The shaming of “heteronormativity” knows no bounds.  The victimology is relentless.  Watch as your kids know more about Belgian colonialism in the Congo than they do about the American founding or the Protestant Reformation.  How can young minds withstand the withering assault?

I say that they don’t.  They are befuddled as they are made ignorant of the West’s great gift of the probing mind that has ballooned the food supply, pulled millions out of living in the dirt, expanded the frontiers of medicine, pushed back disease, spread freedom of conscience, etc.  Software engineers’ “rectified” minds are as toxic to that legacy as anything described in Orwell’s “1984” or Arthur Koestler’s “Darkness at Noon”.

They have succeeded in importing Mao into America.  We are having our own Cultural Revolution and it will end in the same place: stunted minds and stunted lives.

The Times They Are A-Changin’

See the source image

That’s right, for the times they are a-changin’.  We are in a moment similar to the era of Bob Dylan’s youth.  Back then, the target of his ire was the hideous Jim Crow.  The same lyrics could equally apply to the reign of the radical left from the halls of power in Washington, DC, to big metropolitan areas and deep blue states.  Signs are everywhere that “the times they are a-changin’”.

The lyrics of Bob Dylan’s first stanza are poignant:

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

San Fransisco voted world's filthiest slum
San Francisco homeless encampment in 2018

Watch as the smash and grab phenomena sweeps the country in 2021-2022:

I’ll give you three indications that the ruling radical left of the donkey party might “sink like a stone”: (1) 1.7 million voters changed their registration from Democrat to Republican, a net gain of a 1 million to the R’s, from 2021 to 2022; (2) Arizona’s Gov. Doug Ducey signed a bill that allows the state’s students to take $6,400-per-pupil to a school of their parents’ choice; and (3) a San Diego school district dumped their identity-mongering, DEI-loving Superintendent.  Let’s take a closer look at each one of these horsemen of the apocalypse.

The Democrats have a problem: they have a “smell of death” around them (to borrow from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “That Smell”), thanks to “defund the police”, their destruction of livelihoods and standards of living in greenie radicalism, constant campaigns of race and gender warfare, homoerotic curriculums to 7-year-olds, willful refusal to enforce laws, the erasure of the borders of the United States, a concerted effort to suspend the laws of economics in order to bribe and coerce the people into the preferred lifestyle of a fashionable clique, and . . . you get the picture.

The pungent odor that proceeds them has caused 1.7 million voters to flee the smell of the Democrat ship and crawl on board the USS Republican Party.  Some 600,000 went the other way for a plus-1-million gain for the GOP, something not seen since the Elder Days (Lord of the Rings lingo).  According to the AP, who broke the story, the biggest change occurred in the suburbs, by people who previously found Trump repulsive.  Well, Trump’s no longer at the head of the parade. It’s Biden and his cohorts of lefties and greenie utopians at the tiller of state.  It’s not a good look for moms and dads who have to regularly fill up the family sedan and balance the checkbook.  And what awaits them as they go for a walk?  Try ducking stray bullets, avoiding the long strings of homeless encampments, the random assaults by the criminally insane, staying clear of the parks for the drugs and filth and crime, the incessant car and home break-ins, and the schools that aren’t any better, if they’re allowed to be open.  It’s heathier to hunker down with Netflix, popcorn, and a 45.  As Lynyrd Skynyrd put it, “Ooh-ooh that smell”.

And, boy, did parents get a whiff of what’s happening in their child’s classroom.  The lockdowns not only forced parents to sacrifice making ends meet but the end to in-person instruction also showed to many that they could live without the offerings of the teacher unions and the captured education Borg.  “School choice” became more popular, and Gov. Ducey of Arizona and legislative Republicans responded with an expansion of the state’s voucher-like Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESA’s).  If an off-the-charts lefty San Francisco school board majority could be sent packing in, of all places, San Francisco, what do you think can be done in saner locales?

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey in Pheonix on June 17, 2022

It’s amazing to know that the unions’ agitation for school closures also exposed their shenanigans.  It took away the barrier of gates and walls that protected them from any scrutiny.  Parents are awake everywhere from Loudon County to San Francisco.  Arizona has reacted, with other states soon to follow.

Simply put, all that Arizona did was to empower parents with the ability to walk away.  Lets’ see how the Borg survives without the gravy train.

All of the ideological bile that runs the schools came to a head in another place, Sand Diego.  The San Dieguito Union High School District Superintendent let the cat out of the bag, the feline of identity-mongering that is. The mental straitjacket of diversity-equity-inclusion (DEI) that runs the district came out on YouTube.  Take a peek below.

In a training session last week, Superintendent Cheryl James-Ward reduced the kids to a collection of groups.  And as groups, the children’s individuality was smothered under generalizations and racial, socioeconomic stereotypes.  Like a true Marxist, the main target was the successful, the successful who happen to be labeled Asians.  Asians are the Kulaks of Stalin’s fevered imagination in the fevered imagination of James-Ward.  Not enough D’s and F’s for Asians and too many for the oppressed, a problem to be corrected by bureaucratic intervention.  There you have it: the script for bringing one group down and artificially elevating other groups, all done to make the charts look good.  James-Ward would make for an excellent colleague of Orwell’s Winston Smith in the Ministry of Truth of “1984”.  The world of Oceania, though, is not to the liking of most people, Asian or otherwise.

San Dieguito UHSD Superintendent Cheryl James-Ward in a local tv interview on April 23. 2022.

She’s gone, fired by the school board, and so are 1.7 million from the Democrat voter registration rolls, and many Arizona parents who now have the financial heft to escape the Borg’s monopoly.  To borrow again from Lynyrd Skynyrd:

Oo-oo that smell
Can’t you smell that smell?
Oo-oo that smell
The smell of death’s around you

Bob Dylan got a whiff of the same smell and it drew him to the conclusion that the “The Times They Are A-Changin’”.

The Tangle of Our Mind

“God made the angels to show Him splendor, as He made animals for innocence and plants for their simplicity.  But man He made to serve Him wittily, in the tangle of his mind.” – Sir Thomas More in “A Man for All Seasons”.

Sir Thomas More in the movie was correct.  The witty tangle in our heads exists, but the congeries of thoughts, memories, emotions, and facts can generate ideas that can redound to mankind’s credit or condemnation.

Gosh, our present age is amply illustrative of the tangle gone wildly astray.  Ideas, oh, those ideas, of the destruction of moral standards that led an 18-year-old to storm into a classroom to kill 19 10-year-olds and 2 teachers.  Personal grievance cancels human life.  A community’s historical memory is erased by mobs who are angered by the fact that the past doesn’t match the climate of opinion in a college ASB.  Defacement of cherished memorials ensued.  Waves of crime, violence, riots, and general disorder have turned many urban areas into wastelands that would stretch the imagination of sci-fi writers.  The facts of biology are said to play second fiddle to the fancies in our mind.  Chromosomes are made irrelevant by chemical and surgical interventions.  Thus, a mockery is made of girls’ bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports.  Blatant, revolutionary indoctrination is openly disseminated to the very young in their classrooms and is heartily embraced in corporate boardrooms.  The laws of economics take a back seat to highly contestable utopian visions as expressed in climate-change ideology and coerced group equality.  Fuel costs skyrocket; broad inflation is unleashed; supply chains break; shortages appear; livelihoods are threatened; the work ethic is weakened; and depopulation continues apace as fertility rates plummet and pews become vacant.  Get the picture?

Something is at work.  It’s ideas that emanate from the tangle in one person’s mind and enters the tangle of another.  Frequently, if history is any guide, the results aren’t pretty.

These thoughts came to me from a reading of “Friedrich Nietzsche: A Philosophical Biography” by Julian Young (2010 ed.) and a subsequent viewing of Stanley Kramer’s “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961).

The one is an account of high-minded philosophy and the other is about the vile ends that philosophical ideas can be put.  Nothing like the Holocaust, the underlying subject of “Judgment at Nuremberg”, was the intention of Nietzsche in his late 19th century writings.  Nonetheless, the Holocaust happened, and Nazi belief was scented with Nietzsche’s ideas: the will to power, the Supermen, his aristocratic radicalism, the need to be hard, the grotesque eugenics, the rejection of Christianity’s “slave” morality, a monolithic ideology supposedly promoting “community health”, and the condemnation of democracy and pluralistic societies, referring to them as “motley cows”.  It’s all there in Nietzsche’s published musings.

The lesson: a person can control what they write; they can’t control how others use what they wrote.

The whole of the twentieth century into this new one is a museum of the evil that men and women can do . . . from the tangle of their minds.  The demeaning of standards and the institutions that buttress them is the primary culprit.  Revolutionary dogmas – communism, fascism, CRT, transgenderism – were, and are, the excuse to replace the old social fabric with these new (relatively speaking) shiny objects of the mind.

“A Judgment at Nuremberg” put on display only one consequence – Nazism and its Holocaust – while ignoring its competitor, communism.  It was easy to do.  Invading armies into Germany produced ample eye witnesses as they came upon the scenes when the ovens were still warm and the gas chambers had yet to be demolished, something not true for the victims of Marxism-Leninism in the Soviet Union – and to think that they were our allies (!?).  We only had the writings of Solzhenitsyn and a few others to chronicle the horrors of Marxism: Katyn, Kurapaty Forest, 30,000 gulags, the unrestrained secret police, show trials, mass executions, state-manufactured famines.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, then experiencing it with your own eyes, nose, ears, and hands is worth a thousand pictures.

Don’t think for a moment that the horrors arising from the tangle of our minds are only matters for the history books.  The dialectics of Nazism and Marxism are present in our time’s woke brigades.  Yes, dialectics: the alleged truth that everything boils down to open and hidden coercion – the “system” so to speak – of people into the categories of the oppressed and oppressors.  Merit and free will have no role.  Group guilt dominates all.  It’s the pith and marrow of critical legal theory in law and critical race theory for everything else in public policy.  It shows in your child’s school in the forms of teacher training, curriculum, textbooks, and school management.  It shows in banal euphemisms such as “equity” which then bleeds into nearly everything that government does.

Much of our lives are to be turned upside down to fit someone’s incoherent abstraction.  In the end, we are guided down the well-traveled road to societal decay, to places occupied by the likes of the USSR, North Korea, the Khmer Rouge’s Cambodia, Xi’s surveillance-and-gulag state, Castro’s Cuba, and Maduro’s Venezuela.

It’s great for the high priesthood of the woke for they’ll get rich as they feed on the rotting social corpse.

For the rest of us, welcome to the Middle Ages. See, the tangle of the mind can be made to pay, even as it destroys.

Stop the Politics in Everything, Literally Everything

Please watch the clip of political sloganeering in March Madness:

I love March Madness . . . until this year.  Today, the c-suites managing the tournament from their metropolitan lairs gave us a steady diet of messaging, or what is often called “virtue-signaling”.  It’s simply revolting to find almost everything polluted with not-so-thinly-disguised political messaging.  With the tournament as a backdrop, you can see it on everything from the team warm-ups to the litany of ads punctuating every broadcast.  This isn’t basketball.  It’s the same monotonous, droning sermon in the church of the woke revolution.

We are pummeled by “Black Lives Matter” (and its companion, “Stop Racism”) which, by the way, was worn by the players of the tournament’s “Cinderella” team, St. Peters.  Nothing new here.  The banality has been with us since neo-Marxist hooligans started chanting “Pigs in a blanket, fry ‘em like bacon” in 2014.  What does the slogan mean?  Simple, and it’s not the obvious.  If we were limited to the direct meaning of the words, it would be the equivalent of “Breathe” on the St. Peters’ t-shirts.  The slogan is the crowd favorite of revolutionaries for a reason.  It pushes the same tired, worn-out oppressor/oppressed gag.  The real meaning: a state takeover of life by us (Antifa, BLM, Inc., snotty upper-middle-class whites, college ASB’s) is essential to make “Black Lives Matter”, and the lives of all the other identity clients in our sloganeering repertoire.  It’s revolutionary theater.

Not content with that, we get walloped by ads from the NCAA, Buick, and Adidas.  The point in the NCAA commercial is a pure inanity.  They are committed to “opportunity” for “all of us”.  Well, if they weren’t, they’d be sued.  What’s new here?  Virtue-signaling.  The NCAA’s corporate bigs are saying that they aren’t like those yahoos at Trump rallies.  They don’t discriminate . . . in sports that have to discriminate, as in distinguish between winners and losers.  To get around the reality that not everyone gets a trophy, they inundate us with images of the Supreme Court’s “protected classes”, as if there is a shortage of black players on basketball teams.  Do we really have to be constantly reminded, going back decades, that Title IX commands equality in sports, that there exist women basketball players?

They do the “opportunity” schtick to such an extent that they’ve created real opportunities for men to compete on women’s teams.  Can’t make a go of it on the men’s team, jump over to the woman’s pool after pumping up on estrogen and announcing that you feel like a woman today, thanks to the NCAA.  So much for opportunities for women . . . while expanding opportunities for men.

Car companies juice-up their commitment to the revolution by playing the statistical-disparity game.  Going to a break during a timeout, Buick prints across your tv screen, “Over 40% of athletes are women, but they get 10% of the media coverage”.  The ad continues, “Buick is committed to raising that percentage.”  In actuality, they mean, shame on you, the viewers, for finding men’s basketball more interesting than women’s hoops.  Bluntly put, that’s the rub.  They, of all people, should know that ad exposure and expenditures closely track Nielsen ratings.  Dah!

As for “raising that percentage”, Buick apparently believes that the natural human preference for watching excellence in greater physicality in speed, strength, and agility can be reshaped by c-suite decisions to spend more of the shareholders money on social engineering.  Is Buick selling cars or militant affirmative action?  Could the money on that ad campaign be better spent on improving Buick’s competitiveness with Toyota?  Shareholders are indicted for letting them get away this.

And then we got Adidas’ ditzy ad offering (see below).  They’re all-in for the trans agenda, the freedom of trans women to compete.  And shame on you for not relishing the thought of your daughter sharing swimming lanes and a locker room with a woman with male genitalia.  Are these folks selling shoes or gaslighting us into ignoring our lyin’ eyes?

For once, can’t we just sit down and enjoy the performance of exquisitely trained athletes and great coaches without the constant clamor of how committed the c-suite is to lefty politics?  We need a separation of politics from athletics in much the same manner as some have constructed an impenetrable wall separating church and state.  If we can ban the post-game prayers of football players and coaches, we ought to be able to keep the inane political opinions of billionaire athletes and c-suite execs from spoiling the fans’ experience.

For me, once again, I’m done with the whole sordid mess.  They just made my time better spent in my garage working on the MGB and reloading cartridges for sport shooting.  Please, stop the politics in everything, literally everything.
