Amazon’s The Rings of Power: The Middle-earth Matriarchy

In Tom Wolfe’s novel, “A Man in Full”, the main protagonist is the successful Atlanta entrepreneur Charlie Croker who seems to have everything but tranquility and satisfaction.  His corporation is mired in crushing debt but he has all the trappings of material success, and a new, younger trophy wife.  He divorced his first wife, Martha, after decades of marriage.  She begins to resume her life without him by getting back in shape.  She joins a gym and quickly realizes that women have changed, particularly in body type.  Gone is the hour-glass figure and everywhere she notices the absence of hips among the female fitness fanatics.  A female ideal has changed.  She dubs these women “boys with breasts”.

Harvey C. Mansfield, Harvard professor of political philosophy, wrote the book “Manliness” in 2006.  In it, he distinguished between masculinity and manliness.  Masculinity can, but not always, stray into beastly behavior (“toxic masculinity”).  By contrast, manliness in the ancient Greek is synonymous with “courage” and therefore tied to virtue.  A manly person – for women can also exhibit manliness – would protect the weak.  Bluster, bullying, and abuse is not the stuff of manliness.

See the source image
Harvey C. Mansfield

Manliness must be differentiated from the modern slang of “BDE”, or “big d*** energy”.  At a recent campaign rally, Keri Lake (Arizona gubernatorial candidate) introduced Ron DeSantis using the earthy initials.  People enamored of Trump use it.  Manliness should not be confused with brutish bellicosity.

Why mention “boys with breasts” and manliness in connection with Amazon’s Rings of Power?  Simple, if the masterminds of the series, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, wanted to create a Middle-earth matriarchy, they could find no better device than to turn Galadriel into an Aragorn with breasts and refocus Tolkien’s tale on one of the three queens of Númenor, a total of three among the twenty-five rulers of the land in the legendarium.  The women’s characters were crafted to portray Mansfield’s manliness but lack the charisma to inspire a drug addict into an opium den.  And why the decision to exercise the creative arts to distort Tolkien’s story in this manner?  I suspect that something more fundamental is afoot, like the politico-cultural prejudices of a narrow social claque that gave us Jane’s Revenge (pro-abortion terrorism) and cancel culture.  They are the same crowd that ate up as gospel the wild smears against Brett Kavanaugh.  The bias is everywhere in our institutions and now unsurprisingly could be corrupting this rendition of Tolkien’s Middle-earth in the second age.

See the source image
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay

Or, conversely, it could be just a terrible misreading of the public’s desires from the top of the cultural pyramid above the clouds.  McKay and Payne may be doing it without awareness, mistakenly thinking that’s what the public wants.

Either way, we got an incoherent mess in this the first season.  The creation of Mordor was so off-the-wall that it could have been the product of an all-night LSD-laced bull session.  Tolkien’s Mordor was created by the evil super-spirit Melkor to be a land of volcanic activity.  Payne/McKay make it a product of the mechanical operation of turning a sword hilt like a key and voilà we have volcanic eruptions, bursting aquifers, and pyroclastic flows.  By the way, this pyroclastic flow doesn’t behave like a real pyroclastic flow.  Amazingly, magically, the hurricane of super-heated deadly gasses and fine ash doesn’t kill everyone in its path.  Galadriel, the queen of Numenor, and many others walk away as if they were only plastered with the dust from a shaken vacuum cleaner filter.  A pyroclastic flow buried Pompeii in AD 70. Talk to anyone who fled the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption.  Fantasy is riveting if it has some relationship to the real.  This falls into the category of laughingstock.

The speeches of the matriarchy are not, shall we say, awe-inspiring.  It’s not because they were made by women.  They are just simply stale.  Compare any of them to Margaret Thatcher’s refusal to bow to the pressure to compromise at the October 1980 conference of the British Conservative Party: “The Lady’s not for turning” (see below). Or, closer to home, Peter Jackson/Fran Walsh managed the stirring words for Aragorn at the Black Gate of Mordor in “The Return of the King” (see below), or Theoden’s rallying cry before the Rohirrim’s charge into the orc ranks in the Battle of Pelennor Fields (see below). They would steel the spine of anyone facing long odds. In comparison, the words of the Payne/McKay matriarchy are an insipid string of gibberish.

Then we have the disjunction of physical prowess and the natural female musculature and skeletal fragility of, say, the Aragorn with breasts, Galadriel.  There’s a reason why actors as diverse as Christian Bale to Chris Pratt to Michael B. Jordan bulk up.  It’s intuitive to match in some sense the physical action of a role with the appropriate appearance.  While it’s a stretch at times, it’s an easier visual sell.  But take Morfydd Clark’s Galadriel and her domineering physical antics alongside her frail muscle mass.  These are muscles that would have difficulty crushing a grape, let alone wielding a heavy sword to take down the mighty men of Numenor.  They’d be better casting a female MMA fighter for the role.  At least the gap between the action and her appearance would be lessened.  But better yet, reshape Galadriel’s character to fit Tolkien’s strengths for her.

See the source image
Morfydd Clark as Galadriel in The Rings of Power

Ludicrously beefing up the female roles was evident throughout, to the point of relegating the men to subsidiary positions in the story.  The Payne/McKay men are weak, petulant, or stubbornly wrongheaded.  All of a sudden, Tolkien’s mighty men of Numenor become . . . ? ? ? . . . .  One is left to wonder how they became so pivotal and deserving of great respect in the later trilogy.  Now, in the hands of Payne/McKay, the two sagas don’t relate in a basic sense.  What we have with the Rings of Power is something that appears to be an artifact of the present moment of millennials who were raised on identity politics and cultural reparations, warping everything to fit the manias of the present.  Some would say that this is a “woke” LOR and in many ways they would be right.

Even for the Harfoots (proto hobbits), while they have a male leader, it’s two teenage girls in the tribe who carry the action and wisdom of the group.  They dictate the clan’s thread in the story.  The males are limited to being sperm donors, objects of pity, and comic relief.

Women, women, girls, girls everywhere may be alright in another context, but it isn’t Tolkien.  Galadriel was strong in character, and according to Tolkien sparred with the boys, and had special gifts.  She is deserving of a prominent role in any production under the byline of Tolkien.  But Aragorn, or even Legolas, she is not.  Tolkien’s conception for her would parallel the English history of powerful monarchs like Elizabeth I.  Elizabeth was wily and shrewd, but not known for her swordplay with the Earl of Essex.  An adult Galadriel would use her feminine guile, wisdom, and special powers of foresight to command a situation.  Watching this production left me with the idea that this is Tolkien as the women of The View would have him.

We are not viewing Tolkien’s legendarium.  In the hands of Payne/McKay, it became another exercise in the modern fixation to turn women into boys with breasts.  No wonder transgenderism has gone viral and men seem to be settling into the role that Hollywood has assigned for them – as they are seemingly dropping out of the workforce, marriage, and college in substantial numbers.  Will I be watching any more of it?  Maybe.  I’d be interested in seeing how much further this thing descends into our modern cultural rabbit hole.

We Are Stuck with the Democracy that We Have. The Result of Kansas Amendment 2 is Proof.

See the source image
Yard signs in Kansas regarding the upcoming vote on Amendment 2, August 2, 2022.

I’m reminded of the truism in military strategy of knowing your enemy.  In the arena of great policy debates, it takes the form of knowing and being able to summarize your opponent’s arguments.  Don’t expect such awareness among the general public.  They have neither the time nor inclination to do the homework.  More commonly, they have vague analogies and precepts in their heads to help them make sense of the world.  The origins of these ideas are unknown, just blindly accepted as fact, and for which they have adapted their lives around.  Thus, not knowing that these fuzzy ideas have a birthdate, it’s very hard to get the electorate to reverse a notion maybe born in their childhood but one that they have grown accustomed to.

We are simply stuck with the democracy that we have.

Yesterday, Kansas voters soundly rejected Amendment 2, an attempt to remove an earlier exercise of raw judicial power when the state’s high court wrote into the Kansas constitution something that isn’t there, namely the right to abortion.  “Raw judicial power”, yes!

That gets to the crux of the matter.  The general public is mostly unaware that the Kansas high court was egregiously out of their lane, actually to the point of deserving impeachment and removal from office.  They legislated from the bench, a habit taught to them by the Warren Court and its federal progeny.

Formerly, new rights, powers, and privileges were in the wheelhouse of our elected representatives, our legislators.  If you can’t get an idea past our elected representatives, well, that’s called a democratic republic.  Don’t run to black-robed jurists trained in the application of laws to make the laws for you on the fly.  That’s called autocracy.  Distinctions in the basic functions of government aren’t taught and, therefore, most people only have the experience of their limited experience to guide them.  Our instructional and informational organs have fallen flat on their face.

As a result, relatively new ideas – new in the sense of a lifespan of only a generation or two – have an extended grip for an understandably oblivious public. They do their duty, go to the polls, and express a discomfort in reversing something whose origin and basis is mostly unknown to them.

No, don’t mistake this for popular “wisdom”.  It’s always “wisdom” if your side wins.  It’s “racism” or some other scapegoat if your side loses.  Welcome to the airheads of The Squad and fans of Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Who is to blame?  Not the general public, for how can we expect them to exhibit a mental acuity that large groups have never shown before?  If you have a desire to point fingers, aim them in the direction of the media and schools, or maybe the proponents for not doing the necessary groundwork.

The media and schools have been particularly derelict.  Don’t expect your teacher or mediagenic news personality to patiently explain “raw judicial power”.  That would require knowing the existence of the first three articles of the US Constitution.  They establish three branches with their own lanes of competence: to legislate, to carry out the law, and to apply the law.  Today, the appliers now legislate, ergo “raw judicial power”.  How?  The propagandists of the imperial courts claim the law says something that it doesn’t.  Well, it doesn’t say it in clear words, they say, but the words that do exist can be stretched to cover what it doesn’t say.  Got it?

For those 17-year-olds taking US History, it’s called “The Living Constitution”, and in the high school where I did the bulk of my teaching, the textbook has an entire chapter devoted to it.  The “grooming” starts early.

No wonder people get attached to The Living Constitution.  Yet, opinion polls consistently show disapproval of its consequences.  How else can one get to racism as anti-racism from equal protection in the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments?  How else can one get to defund the police, no-cash bail, non-prosecution of crimes, blanket early releases from prison, and filthy, homeless, dangerous, and drug-addled streets and parks?  How else can one codify in court opinions the newly minted wall of separation between gender and chromosomes?  And as a result, get masturbation, new ideas for playtime, and drag queens in elementary school and public libraries?  How else can sports designed for one set of chromosomes be destroyed by the forced acceptance of those with a different set?  How else can we get to Obama and Biden Justice Department letters threatening Title IX actions against schools who insist on keeping distinct bathrooms for each set of chromosomes?  Want your ten-year-old daughter to share a bathroom with a twelve-year-old XY “girl”?  The Living Constitution folks do.  The malformation of the Constitution knows no bounds.

It doesn’t stop there. Try to announce the obvious and you’ll face condemnation, maybe prosecution, disciplinary action, termination of employment, ostracism, and a life under the chronic threat of Twitter-hell.  There are dire consequences for speaking truth to . . . .

If we are ever to get back to law being law, and not just an utterance of the zeitgeist, people who are cognizant of the nonsense must stand up and work to correct the miseducation coming from our educrats and telegenic poseurs.  Strap on your waiters for this is going to be a long hard slog.

California, A Sanctuary for Modern Gender Lysenkoism

May be an image of 1 person and text

What is Lysenkoism and what does it have to do with California?  Lysenkoism was a Soviet theory of biology that illustrates the corrupting influences of ideology on science.  In addition to the bloodthirsty nature of communism, it would prove to be a force multiplier for famine in the 1930’s in the Soviet Union.  In like manner, today, transgenderism is just the latest edition of the attempt to have ideology guide science, and still call it “science”.  It too will have dire consequences particularly for the young who will be swept into it.  California is trying to establish itself as the mecca for this latest thought experiment with our children as guinea pigs.

While pursuing this transgenderism delusion, California has a hard time keeping its people and businesses.  For the second straight year, the state has registered an absolute reduction in its population, down some 117,552 in 2021 alone.  From 2000 to 2020, the state shed a net of 2.6 million people.  Similarly, increasingly, businesses in the state are decamping for parts beyond the reach of California’s legislators, tax collectors, and regulators.  The consulting firm Spectrum Solutions counts a total of 265 relocations of California-headquartered enterprises from 2018 to June 2021.  It’s undoubtedly an undercount since many fly under the radar – like the number for “apprehensions at the border”.

The published 2021 list of business out-migrations is quite impressive and includes Apple and Oracle (now Austin, Tx.) and Nestle USA (now Arlington, Va.).  If the state won’t be hospitable to the spirit of enterprise, the state seems to be salivating at the prospect of becoming a kind of Vatican for the grisly arts: snuffing out unborn life and mutilating the bodies of confused tweens.  Abortion from conception to birth (and maybe beyond) is lauded and subsidized, going so far as to advertise for out-of-state “customers”.  The “gender affirming care” (euphemisms abound in the grisly arts) of double mastectomies, hormonal injections, castrations, genital reconstruction operations, and psychological indoctrination is favored in ways the real economy is not.  Fascinating.

This medical assault on the bodies of the young is justified under “transgenderism”, today’s ideological clone of Lysenkoism.  Lysenkoism is an artifact of the Marxist belief system dictating the architecture of science.  The inherent qualities in basic biology are rejected – nothing is inherent in Marxism but all is said to be a product of socio-economic power structures.  Sound familiar to the rantings of the race hustlers of critical race theory?  Trofim Lysenko, Soviet biologist who was heralded in Soviet propaganda as a genius, rejected genetics and based his agriculture advice on discredited 18th century notions of inheritance (Lamarckism).  The whole idea easily conformed to the pretensions of Marxism-Leninism.  The result was the catastrophic crop failures leading to the Holodomor, the famine in the Ukraine and Donbas, the vast breadbasket of Russia and Europe.

May be a black-and-white image of 1 person
Trofim Lysenko in 1938

Thus, what happens when ideology guides science?  You have massive calamities.  Like the Soviet-inspired famines, we will have cohorts of impressionable adolescents equally damaged, growing up psychologically scarred and physically mutilated, and it will all be chalked up as “gender affirming”.  For many, they’ll end up like the 60-year-old regretting the body-covering tattoos, now fading and wrinkled, of their twenties.  Only worse.

Inspired by the conceit of transgenderism, California State Senator Scott Weiner has introduced a bill that would create an interstate underground railroad for sex-change operations, in effect, neutering the laws of the other states, according to Jeremy Redfern, press secretary of the Florida Department of Health.  Children from Florida, or wherever, could be placed in California foster care, with or without parental notice and consent, and in essence Mengele-like experiments would be conducted on their bodies (Josef Mengele was the sinister Auschwitz doctor).  The bill promises to prohibit the enforcement of another state’s arrest warrant if the warrant is related to that state’s restrictions on sex-change treatments.

Josef Mengele, Auscwitz doctor and eugenics enthusiast, and a trainload of inmates arriving at Auscwitz-Birkenau in May of 1944.

Mengele was galvanized by a faith in another popular pseudoscience of the early 20th century: eugenics, or the idea that we should breed a “better” human being like we could a horse.  Many academic, medical, and public health organizations of the day jumped onboard the eugenics train.  Transgenderism has the same groupie effect, and sadly it’s frequently reported by the same people who have next to no understanding of science.  What’s more astonishing is the ideological capture of people who should know better.  The gambit was blown wide open when the American Academy of Pediatricians guidelines on transgenderism were shown to be written by a trans activist with a degree not in science but “women’s, gender and sexuality studies”.  All-too-often, such organizational policy stands are written by a narrow claque of activists.  It is neither reflective of the science or the membership.

In contrast, the euphoric and headlong rush into transgenderism is taking a pause in Europe and many states, except for the half-witted firebrands running the state of California, ironically as they run people and businesses out of the state.  Dutch gender-dysphoria researchers call for “more research” before more definitive actions are taken.  One Dutch gender-dysphoria specialist warned of the dangers in using sex-change chemical treatments by saying that “little research has been done so far on treatment with puberty blockers and hormones in young people.”  Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare (NBHW) warned that “the risks [of sex-change treatments] outweigh the benefits at present.”  They cited the “uncertain science” about the most popular sex-change prognoses.  Thus, to put it succinctly, “gender affirming” is a nice way of saying “dangerous”.  But still, California wants to go there.

It took 8-10 million dead in the USSR in the 1930’s and chronic crop failures to have Lysenkoism quietly go down the memory hole.  What will it take for California to halt its breakneck slide into an “uncertain science”?  How many kids will have to be disfigured and emotionally scarred before saner heads take over?

And to think that Governor Gavin Newsom is feted as a presidential contender for 2024.  Given all that we know, who’d wish that on any nation, let alone our own?

The Un-Unhinged Left

See the source image
Transgender athlete Rachel McKinnon, a biological male who identifies as female, won the women’s Masters Track Cycling World Championships sprint title for the second year in a row in 2019.

I have this question.  You can join a political movement, but how do you join a sex?  The seasoned actor Alan Alda used to call himself a proud feminist, but would it be reasonable for him to announce that he is now a woman, if he was so inclined?  The thought came to mind after reading about some celebrity leftists coming to the conclusion that the ultimate of identity politics, self-identity, has its limits.  The prospect of former men, now declaring themselves to be women, shattering women’s NCAA and Olympic records and sidelining women who were born women may have revitalized the obvious truism that chromosomes matter in physical activities.  At some point, politics must face reality.

J.K. Rowling was one of the first lefties to the realization of the reality.  She noticed that trans-ideology was the invasion route of men into women’s athletics and the obliteration of the athletic prowess of “menstruators”.  As such, she has come under withering fire from hyper-activist “trans”-women.  Other brave female voices have joined her as they too confront “cancellation” from the usual sources.  That’s why they are courageous.

Recently Bette Midler tweeted the following: “WOMEN OF THE WORLD!  We are being stripped of our rights over our bodies, our lives and even of our name!  They don’t call us ‘women’ anymore; they call us ‘birthing people’ or ‘menstruators’, and even ‘people with vaginas’! Don’t let them erase you!  Every human on earth owes you!”

The singer Macy Gray was succinct when she stated in an interview, “I will say this and everyone’s gonna hate me, but as a woman, just because you go change your parts, doesn’t make you a woman, sorry.”

See below:

NY Times columnist Pamela Paul, no right-winger by any stretch, echoing Gray, said, “Even the word ‘women’ has become verboten.”  And further, “In its place are unwieldy terms like ‘pregnant people,’ ‘menstruators’ and ‘bodies with vaginas . . . . [this is a] bitter way to mark the 50th anniversary of Title IX.”

The Left may be unhinged in many of their social, economic, and political views, but they aren’t so crazy as to accept the move to make women’s sports an offshoot of men’s sports.  Call these brave voices the un-unhinged Left.

Ketanji Brown Jackson (KBJ), No, A Thousand Times NO!

May be an image of 1 person
KBJ before the Senate Judiciary Committee considering her nomination for the Supreme Court.

We have reached the point of personal ideology being a disqualification for office.  Progressivism has long been subversive of the rule of law.  One commentator of recent memory called the progressive’s “living constitution” an ongoing, never-ending constitutional convention.  Jurists under its sway can make and enforce law at will.  No longer content with simply applying the law in court cases, they’ll force us back into the jungle of the rule of men (or women, or . . .), and away from the rule of law.  We don’t need any more judges as potentates. That means a healthy “No” to KBJ.

KBJ is an embodiment of the threat to our civilizational order.  It’s more than her refusal to define a woman when asked.  Some of her rulings are just way out there, as in contortions to ignore the restraints in the job description in order to achieve long-sought lefty ends.  She’s more of a revolutionary than a judge.

One example of the radical’s monstrous rationale came to the fore in committee hearings considering her nomination.  Sen. Grassley (R, Iowa) brought to light her ruling as a DC District Court judge in Make the Road New York v. McAleenan, (2019).  She, with a stroke of her pen, made a ruling in violation of the law.  At issue is the power of the AG or Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) to exercise “unreviewable” (by the courts) discretion to determine the classes of aliens eligible for expedited removal from the country (Immigration and Naturalization Act, section 1225).  So, what did she do?  She went ahead and “reviewed” the DHS decision.

She tried to hang her hat on the Administrative Procedures Act (APA), as if it was the wormhole to make reviewable what was clearly not reviewable.  So astounded was the normally liberal DC Circuit Court of Appeals that a panel of the Court reversed and admonished her by ruling that,

“There could hardly be a more definitive expression of congressional intent to leave the decision about the scope of expedited removal, within statutory bounds, to the Secretary’s independent judgment.”

She was so intent on bashing the Trump administration’s immigration policies that she violated the law when making a decision on the law.  Try to make sense of that.  Some could try, given that many are completely unaware that Article III of the Constitution gives to Congress the power to set the federal courts’ appellate jurisdiction.  In other words, by statute, “unreviewable” means “unreviewable” by KBJ, et al.

May be a cartoon of one or more people and text

The APA is not to be confused, as she apparently did, with the Constitution.  This person is a radical, an unhinged progressive, or maybe even a revolutionary.  As such, her nomination should be rejected, if not setting her to face impeachment.

Biden’s First Supreme Court Nominee. She’ll Be a Doozy.

See the source image
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer

Justice Stephen Breyer is stepping down.  Since the Supreme Court has insinuated itself in all matters of life, there’s much at stake when choosing a juridical potentate for a lifetime appointment.  President Biden set down his criteria for filling the seat and, guess what, it has little to do with merit.  It has everything to do with melanin count and genitalia.  But does it, really?

In a pandering applause line to a radicalized party base in a debate, Biden boasted of a “black” and “women” choice.  Do you think for a moment that’s what he’s really after?  Do you think the “black” part is encapsulated in a Clarence Thomas?  Do you think “black woman” means a Condoleezza Rice (NS advisor to Bush 43, former provost to Stanford University, Dir. of the Hoover Institution, and concert-quality pianist) or Winsome Sears (Lt. Gov. of Virginia)?  No, the closest equivalent is Corey Bush, charter member of The Squad.  Many of the women that he chooses are lefties, so much so that it’s hard to avoid the descriptor “socialist”.

Take for example his floundered choice for comptroller of the currency, Saul Omarova, a graduate of Moscow State University pre-Soviet collapse.  This Cornell University prof favors a Fed takeover of banking, a proposal that would make Lenin’s corpse smile.  Get the idea?

In a debate, Biden plaintively cried, “Do I look like a socialist?”  I don’t know what a socialist “looks” like since many of them look like they stepped off the pages of style magazines.  But I do expect a full-blown lefty of the kind that’ll produce the gibberish of a Sonia Sotomayor.  Once installed, the appointee better have an army of clerks to clean up the mess in her opinions.

The End of Women’s Sports?

May be an image of 1 person and text

Remember the scandal of the East German doping (male hormones) of their female swimmers that ran from the 1970’s into the 1980’s and included the 1976 Montreal Olympics (read about it here)?  Our girls (XX chromosomes) had to unknowingly compete against masculinized girls (still XX chromosomes) and few knew it, not even some of the East German girls.  Later, these same German girls would suffer mental and physical damage, and later to give birth to babies with serious defects.

As for the Americans, some in the press at the time referred to them as “Ugly Americans” for their justifiable complaints.  American Shirley Babashoff, slated to be the next Mark Spitz, wound up with one gold and a bunch of second place finishes in the ’76 Games.  She refused to remain silent and sounded the alarm but was dismissed as “Surly Shirley”.  She was right, she had courage, she was vilified, and it took 31 years (2007) for the scandal’s cover to be blown for all to see.

See the source image
Shirley Babashoff (r) and a portion of the 1976 US Olympic women’s swim team.

Check out these understandable reactions by other members of the ’76 team:
“To be frank, I don’t think we should look like men.”
“I wouldn’t want to walk around the neighborhood looking like a guy.”
“That’s not the way God created us to be like that (looking like DDR Swimmers).”

That was then; this is now.  Circa 2022 we have gone full circle, and then some.  Today, those East Germans would be heralded as trans pioneers.  We have men wanting to women and women wanting to be men, jumbled with the many whose psyche match their chromosomes, competing in women’s sports . . . with the full connivance of the so-called adults in the room.  Chic ideologies have redefined scandal as liberation, and created a massive class of new victims whose sole characteristic is their satisfaction with God’s endowment.  What chaos, what a mess.

Transgender Lia Thomas (MTF) recently hit the airwaves and pool at the U. of Penn. as a sensation setting pool, program, and meet records 38 seconds ahead of a real deal teammate.  Then in a Saturday meet, lo and behold, Lia ran into transgender Iszac Henig (FTM) – who underwent a double mastectomy – who bested Lia twice.  There you have it: female sports are to be dominated by people disenchanted with mother nature.  It’s a competition among the disgruntled, leaving behind the long hours of training and coaching for the well-adjusted and contented girl (XX chromosome), the kind of girl that you as a boy (XY chromosome) wouldn’t mind taking home to mother (also XX chromosome).  The other two would be difficult to explain.

The “adults” who sanctioned this biological miasma are – you may have guessed it – the NCAA.  In a policy that might have been written by a paid lobbyist or Ivy League lawyer, trans female athletes mustn’t compete on the women’s team until after one year of “testosterone suppression treatment”.  Not a word about bone density, muscle mass, or anything else is mentioned.  Much of the rest of their physical accoutrement in the men’s league follows them into the women’s pool.

Here’s the kicker.  The policy is justified by the quality of reasoning that you’d expect from a brainwashed sophomore Anthropology major writing on systemic phobias of western civilization.  Here it goes, brace yourself:

“. . . many people may have a stereotype that all transgender women are unusually tall and have large bones and muscles.  But that is not true. . . .  The assumption that all male-bodied people are taller, stronger, and more highly skilled in a sport than all female-bodied people is not accurate.”

Has anyone informed the geniuses at NCAA headquarters that the subject in question is not whether tall women or small men exist.  That’s wholly irrelevant.  At the level of elite competition in the vast majority of sports, men are taller, bulkier, faster, and stronger than women.  The statement has no credible place in any policy defense, let alone one that seeks to condone the competition of taller, bulkier, faster, and stronger women-with-a-Y-chromosome with women limited to the fetal arrangement.  It’s one of the goofiest things ever put to paper.

How can women’s sports survive this mounting chaos over who’s a woman?  Don’t look to bureaucrats of the NCAA for enlightenment.  They spread the chaos by transmitting the confusion.  The answer lies with us, the fans of girls’ sports. We must demand an end to the nonsense.  Chromosomes are the ultimate determinant, not surgeries, injections, or counseling.  Our pools, meets, and locker rooms must be made as safe for our girls and women (XX chromosome) as anywhere else.

Our Marxist Zeitgeist

Scene from “Raya and the Last Dragon”

While reading Ross Douthat’s (NYT film critic) review of Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon”, I was struck by how art may be imitating life, or vice versa. Honestly, I haven’t seen the movie, and won’t. But his depiction of the movie sheds light on what is happening on our streets and in power circles of the Democratic Party.

We are in a peculiar zeitgeist. The word “zeitgeist” became popular among poets (Goethe) and philosophers (Hegel) in the 1800’s to refer to the spirit of a time. How did we get to the zeitgeist of official neo-Marxist indoctrination of the kids (CRT, campaigns against systemic racism, etc.) and Green New Deal socialism? This is much more ambitious than simply punishing an individual political actor, party, or business. This political endeavor is a much, much grander thing: a revolution.

Ross Douthat

Douthat’s film review brings to light certain aspects at play in the newly constructed modern mind, especially amongst the people who dwell in our cultural commanding heights. He cites the fact that older Disney animated movies held to a particular set of plot devices that have disappeared from their newer offerings. Snow White, for instance, depicted an older fairy tale with a protagonist prince or princess, a romance, and a villain. The plot was simple and endearing.

What does Disney offer us today? The protagonist is still there, but the villain turns out to be an abstract threat, “some impersonal force, some moral or spiritual disturbance”. The romance is replaced by a sibling or platonic bond. These two characteristics speak volumes about today’s ethos.

The romance of man and woman is either reduced to pure physicality or, as in the case of “Raya”, gone. Why gone? Fear of the adjective “heteronormative”. Someone in the audience might be offended by the prevalence of the only sexual attraction tied to procreation. Let’s face it, LGBTQ is the chic victim group of our time. So, the man/woman attraction is replaced by something more neutral. In that way the prominence of heteronormativity is suppressed in order to raise the status of the other sexual arrangements.

Next, the absence of personalized evil – like a Simon Legree in Uncle Tom’s Cabin – in popular media. Evil is nebulous, in the form of “some impersonal force, some moral or spiritual disturbance”. A constant inundation of this plot device gets us into thinking of our alleged problems as the product of abstract forces. This might go a long way in explaining the resort to the abstract “system” in the scurrilous writings of the Anti-Racism crusaders Robin DeAngelo or Ibram X. Kendi. It’s the justification for the “systematic” reordering of the economy, and the omnipresent life associated with it, in the Green New Deal, and all of society in CRT. This is not reform, but revolution.

We probably got to the destination of our current Marxist moment with the assistance of popular entertainment. It’s easy to pour blood on a cop’s home, or maybe shoot him or her, or topple statues, or ransack a downtown business district if such actions are instrumental in bringing down the hypothetical, abstracted evil. It’s easier to push the nihilism through organs of the state if the population has been softened by a warped version of reality.

Something to think about, don’t you think?

There’s No Cure for Stupid

Laurence Fox and Rachel Boyle in the dust-up on the BBC’s The Question.

How do people make themselves, for want of a better word, stupid?  People are normally rational beings (maybe I’m too optimistic), so how do they end up … stupid?  One possible answer is that they believe in fictions.  Turning an untruth into truth is quite a feat, and the source of much misery when it is pronounced by people with a media bullhorn.  One fount of “stupid”with a patina of academic glamour is identity politics and its conferring of “wokeness” on its adherents.

I define “identity politics” as  the attempt to assign virtue and vice to people according to immutable qualities such as melanin count and genitalia.   A subsidiary precept is the dualism of oppressor/oppressed for which all people must descend, as based on the aforementioned unchangeable personal characteristics – something any dyed-in-the-wool Marxist would find familiar.  The result is a profusion of baloney.  But woe be to those caught in the snares of the woke cadres, as Laurence Fox soon discovered.

Rachel C. Boyle

An example of a dolt on parade was broadcast to the world in the BBC’s Question Time when a supposed “academic”, Rachel Boyle, leveled the banality of “racism” at Laurence Fox for his skepticism about sending all criticism of the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle,  into the “racism” black hole (“black” being no attempt at cultural appropriation).

Take a look.

Boyle has all the academic credentials of wokeness, she being a lecturer and researcher in race and ethnicity at Edge Hill University in Lancashire.  The amazing thing about her is the seriousness and self-confidence in her batty denunciations of Fox.  She strings together pejorative epithets like a latter-day Muhammed Ali at one of his prefight weighing-ins.  Or more accurately, she spouts the nonsense with all the gravity of a lab-coated functionary in the NSDAP Racial Policy Office with calipers measuring the width of noses to peg a person into the official racial hierarchy.  Completely absent is any sense of humility.  You know, the lack of any self-awareness that she could be wrong.

One of the ramifications for believing in the unbelievable is the potential for human slaughter.  People lose their individuality as they are subsumed into artificially differentiated groups.  It’s easy to condemn thousands in a single stroke.

I came across the phenomena of genocidal females – to go along with their more numerous alternatively gendered soul-mates – while reading Aleksander Solzhenitsyn’s second volume of his The Red Wheel.  In exile in Switzerland with Lenin were Rosalia Zemlyachka and Yevgenia Bosch, both having key posts in the Bolsheviks’ Red Terror from 1917 to 1921.

Rosalia Zemlyachka

Zemlyachka, a Marxist of longstanding, was instrumental with Bela Kun of bringing the Bolshevik butchery to the Crimea in 1920-21.  Bosch similarly has blood all over her hands.

Yevgenia Bosch

She became the head of the Ministry of the Interior in the Ukraine when the Bolshevik Red Army seized control of the country.  Say “Ministry of the Interior” and you may as well be saying “secret police”, “more blood of the bourgeoisie”, and “Red Terror”.  Her body count came to around 400,000-600,000 murdered Cossacks, Jews, and assorted “enemies of the people”.

How can normally decent people become mass killers?  It’s highly unlikely without some animating belief system overwhelming all considerations, ideas like those of our would-be totalitarian interlocutor from the woke departments of Edge Hill University, Rachel Boyle.  Reducing human beings to categories of goodness and badness as based on biological traits is dangerous business, very dangerous business.

Chik-fil-A Rejects the Salvation Army and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)

Conservative political figures’ calls for “Chick-fil-a Appreciation Day” in 2012 resulted in long lines, such as this one in Wichita, Kansas. The call came on the heels of LGBTQ protests of the company. (Photo: NPR)

Has Chik-fil-A abandoned the Salvation Army and FCA?  The company claims it is merely redirecting its charitable giving.  The media center-left, which includes the heavies and the so-called “fact-checking” sites, have howled that the criticism of the company’s action from the right is gross hyperbole.  For me, I smell a rat … in the company and among our disreputable and tendentious national media.

Snopes.com came to the defense of the company’s decision by saying that Chik-fil-A and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes were just 2 of 80 organizations losing support.  Snopes quoted the company’s announcement in describing their new giving philosophy as one to “deepen its giving to a smaller number of organizations working exclusively in the areas of education, homelessness and hunger.”  Hogwash! What a pile of mush.

How do you think a sellout to the cultural left occurs?  “Deepen” becomes synonymous with “abandon”.  The new foci are favorite hobby horses for the left’s ongoing program of social engineering.  It’s certainly a way to soften the company’s image away from a Bible-based Christianity to a compromised form more compatible with transgendered bathrooms and new forms of nuptials.

Snopes and its media parasites aren’t engaging in “fact-checking” but in “claptrappery”.  They mistake PR fluff for real motive.  The company’s statement has all the earmarks of the ages-old campaign tactic of removing a candidate’s hard edge in order to appeal to a wider public.  In this case, the company avoids the boycotts and the Antifa goons.

Until I hear of anything else, “sellout” appears to be the more accurate word.
